Biography: James Daniel Simpson, III, born in Little Rock Arkansas on April 18, 1940, passed away on Feb. 19, 2023.  He is preceded in death by his parents James
Daniel Simpson, Jr. and Ellen House Simpson, grandparents James Daniel Simpson and Ruth Bales Simpson, Joseph Warren House and Julia Clarke House.  He is survived by his wife, Virginia (Ginna), daughters Jody House Simpson and Clarke Lea Simpson, grandsons James Russell Thompson, Joseph Townes Delp and Warren Forbes Delp.  J.D. is also survived by his brother Joseph Warren Simpson (Cindy), their children Ellen Garrett Simpson Thalheimer (Evans), great niece Sloan Elizabeth Thalheimer, Preston Modisette Simpson and Parker Danielle Pitts, his cousins Robert Williams Tucker (Diane) and Everett Tucker, III (Becky).

J.D.’s life was defined by the things he was dedicated to, a lifelong passion for duck hunting, his beloved dogs, and spending time with his girls, (but only during the “off-season”).  His dedication to duck hunting and preserving the habitat for ducks was limitless.  His dedication to his job at Stephens Inc. for which he worked for over 50 years knew no bounds.

JD was a man of great empathy.  He was a philanthropist that spread the gamut from such organizations ranging from a recovery center to a donkey rescue farm.   There is much more that the family could say to the life of J.D., but the family is most aware that he was not a fan of long obituaries.  Therefore, we will only say in ending is that there was not anything in life he loved more than his family.  If he loved you, you knew it and if he didn’t, you knew that too.  We loved him dearly and we will miss him every day.  The family is fairly certain that heaven has never seen anyone like J.D.

Visitation will be held at Ruebel Funeral Home Thursday, February 23, from 3:30 to 6:00PM. The funeral will be a private graveside ceremony.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, EasterSeals of Arkansas, Nature Conservancy, Boy’s Club or PARK. Arrangements are under the direction of RuebelFuneralHome.com

JD was an Arkansas original, in the very best sense of that description. He was a delightful companion and I am proud to claim him as a 1959 classmate at Episcopal High School, Alexandria, Virginia. He never gave less than 110% in whatever he undertook. Clear breathing in heaven awaits. +RIP+

Jody,
My condolences to you and your family. I had the privilege of knowing JD at Episcopal some 65 years ago but he made an indelible impression on me at the time, particularly when he psyched himself up for study hall ! You had to be there to believe it. Blessings to all his family. Kenan.

Ginna, Jody, and Clarke,
I’m so sorry for your loss. JD was an important figure in my childhood in Arkansas and represented, to me, everything that was good, and kind, and pure about our state. I wish I had known him better and for much longer but my memories and gratitude for his influence on my formative years is profound. I send my love and sincere condolences to you all.

May peace and love sustain J.D.’s family whom he loved so much. He was a constant force for good as a member of The Nature Conservancy Board of Trustees and as solid a friend as a person could have. J.D. leaves a legacy of commitment and courage, never backing away from a challenge and always bringing good humor and wit with him. Millions of trees have been planted in the Big Woods of Arkansas with his unwavering support. He will be remembered and loved. Nancy

JD was fun, funny, generous and kind to Friends of Bill W. And Dr. Bob. He took time out of his schedule to listen, as long as it was worth listening to! He cared about the recovery community and was willing to give back what was so freely given to him. I asked him once what prompted his ongoing support to WSF. He said “because my sponsor, Sam R. told me too”. Good answer! I’m sure they are all having a grand reunion at the Big Mtg in the Sky. God likely broke the mold He made JD with as there’s nobody like him. JD Simpson III was a good man.

Our deepest condolences to J.D.’s family. He was unique; a warm, kind and funny man who I enjoyed knowing through the Nature Conservancy which he supported with all his heart for wildlife and our environment. May J.D. Rest In Peace and rise in glory. ❤️

JD was know to me as the COLORFUL older brother of my lifelong friend Warren. He later swore that he funded my Porsche purchase through his purchases at Tipton & Hurst! I do appreciate that little stock he got us all into. I will miss him and our banter of conversations over the years.

Warren and Family,

My prayers are with you and all your family at this time. My office was next to JD when I first met him at Stephens. He would always ask how my daughters were doing in college and talk about his family as well. He was such a hoot and full of life. He will definitely be missed as he is "one of a kind".

J.D. Simpson was a man of many words, few of which were appropriate for polite company, or fragile ears.

Because of that and my lifelong friendship with the Simpsons (especially Jody), J.D. was a lifelong friend of mine. I was on the 17th tee box when I finally saw Jody’s text from twelve hours before telling me J.D. had passed. I considered calling it a day with only two holes left but figured that would be like leaving a duck blind before a limit was taken and that would only anger him. So, I played on.

Rest in peace, J.D. Simpson. Your professional in-home caretakers may not miss you, but I will.

J.D. Simpson was the real deal. No matter who you were, if help was needed J.D. was there. He made a call to Hazelton to help a friend. His response was I have a building named after me they will take my @%XX calls. And they did. Thanks for always being such a dear friend to many.

J.D. Simpson was a colorful character, and Lyon College will be forever changed by his leadership and generosity. I was a student when J.D. first joined the Board of Trustees at then Arkansas College; I met him at a luncheon that paired student leaders with trustees. But it was years later, after I returned to the college as an employee, when I grew to know him as a leader and philanthropist. He always brought a smile and his authentic self to our campus. Lyon College is better ... and I personally have a greater appreciation for Benelli shotguns ... because of him.

Clarke and family,

My prayers go out to your entire family. My memories of JD put a smile on my face, sometimes it’s an awkward smile but always a smile. As it said in his obituary You always knew where you stood with JD. That’s what I loved about him. Behind the gruff man was a very generous soul. I love you all!
