Biography: Mr. Albert F. Otten peacefully passed from this earth into God’s loving hands surrounded by the love of his family on October 16, 2007. This proud and loving father and husband, grandfather great-grandfather was born December 30, 1927 in Queens, New York, to Albert C. and Barbara Otten who preceded him in death along with his son Albert F. Otten Jr. While his most significant accomplishment was raising his five children, Mr. Otten also achieved considerable success in his career in banking and finance. From humble beginnings he attended Iona College of New York and went to work for 17 years at CIT Financial, rising to the role of Executive Vice President for Consumer Finance. In the mid 1960’s he became the National Sales Director for Yeager and Associates, an international banking and finance consulting firm. In 1969, Al brought his family to Little Rock, Arkansas, where he rose to position of Executive Vice President for Worthen Bank and Trust. He eventually retired as Senior Vice President for Eagle Bank of Little Rock. Mr. Otten served his community early in life as Captain of the Volunteer Fire Department of Freeport, New York. Later, along with his good friend Frank Douglas, he was responsible for building and maintaining the hands-on model train exhibit at the Arkansas Children’s Museum at the Old Train Station in Little Rock. Al was an avid model train collector since childhood. This once small hobby eventually translated into his 4 term assumption of the office of President of the Lionel Collector’s Club of America. While his train hobby gave him great pleasure, it was the friendships he made that were his greatest treasure. Mr. Otten is survived by Fran, his loving wife of 56 years, his brother’s family, Bob and Rebecca Otten of Middlebury, Ct; as well as his loving children, Dr. James and Vickie Otten of Lawrence, Kansas, Michael Otten of Little Rock, Susan Otten of Austin Texas and Jack and Lesa Otten of Fayetteville, Arkansas. He will also be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Craig and his wife Christine, John Mark, Matthew, and great granddaughter Lexi James. A requiem Catholic Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 20, 2007 at Our Lady of the Holy Souls Church. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be sent for cancer research to the Stowers Institute for Resource Development (SIRD), 1000 East 50th St., Kansas City, MO, 64110, attn: Sherry Russell, account number #1735, or in care of Ruebel Funeral Home, 6313 West Markham St, Little Rock, 72205. ‘God doesn’t look at how much we do, but with how much love we do it.’ Mother Teresa Cremation arrangements are by Ruebel Funeral Home of Little Rock. Jack,

This is something I ment to do back when I got the news of your father; however, here I am now telling you how sorry I am for the loss of your dad. My father and yours are close to the same age and I am trying to invest as much time as possible with him as I know you tried to do with your father. My prayers are still with you and your family.

Jack, I never had the pleasure of meeting your dad, but clearly he was a wonderful man - and loved greatly by many. I'm very sorry for your family's loss, and I know it's not easy. I also know, however, that the Lord is there to heal your hurt, and I'm praying that you feel His love and peace during this difficult time. Sincerely,

Fran, your enormous loss is felt by all who knew Al from one or more of his myriad career and volunteer commitments. He was first, last and always a solid friend but he was so much more to those who had the good fortune to spend time with him. He is singularly responsible for my involvement with the Lionel Collectors Club of America (LCCA). Al taught all of us the joys of volunteerism and the pleasure of bringing smiles to others. He also brought a banker's expertise to the leadership of this club when it sorely needed it and he built the foundation for what has become quite simply "The Best Toy Train Club on the Planet".
Shortly before Al's passing the board of LCCA, through unanimous acclamation, named him Chairman Emeritus. A fitting tribute for this most unselfish and inspiring individual. Each of us now has our own personal library of great Al Otten remembrances and just now I find myself smiling.....

Dear Fran and Family: Please know that the prayers and thoughts of Al's LCCA "family" are with you in your loss. Al's 28 years of elected service to our club formed the basis for what LCCA has become today. On a personal note, I truly value my frendship with Al over the past 27 years, and I'll miss his humor and laugh.

Fran.....Mr. Otten was head of the Consumer Division at Worthen Bank when Jack and I met and worked for him. He was a wonderful boss, and his brash, Yankee ways endeared him to all who crossed his path. You always knew where you stood with Big Al, as he was affectionately called behind his back!

We send our sympathy to you, along with wishes for healing and peace for you and your family.

Love, Ces Kelso

Dear Fran, Jim, Jack, Susan and Mike, I am deeply saddened by your loss. I consider it my loss, as well. I am blsessed to have been touched by your father during the most important time of my life; when I grew up with all of you. Al made me laugh. Sometimes Al made me scared (until I figured out he was kidding). But, Al always touched me with his love for his family, and his family's friends. I'll miss him, as you will. But, it's the circle of life and God's plan. May God grant you all peace and fond memories. Love,

I was a relatively new member of Lionel Collectiors Club of America (LCCA) when club President Al Otten recruited me to become the Editor of the club's magazine (The Lion Roars) with the upfront comment, "I won't take NO for an answer" - so I said "YES." I never regretted that answer because it enabled my immersion in the toy train hobby.

During my tenure as Editor, Presient Al championed the development of the club's communications program for member recruitment and retention. His vision for the club and deep involvement in the hobby he loved set the tone for LCCA for years to come.

In the spring of 2007 when the significance of his illness had emerged, I arranged an interview and photo session with Al for publication in TLR. Through that article he revealed to club members his childhood ordeal with polio, told the story of the Lionel train set purchased by his father to help pass the time during the long recovery, and shared his delight in purchasing a new Lionel re-make of that exact train. Although he was feeling the effects of the disease and the treatment regimen, for that time he seemed like a kid again ... playing with his favorite Lionel train.

Now he's talking trains with Joshua Lionel Cowen at the heavenly layout in Grand Celestial Station.

Dear Jack, I lost my dad in 2000 due to cancer, so I empathize with your loss at this time. It was good to read the obituary. I had no idea that your father was into trains. I can picture his joy at showing them to children.

I know that we can have the opportunity to be with our families forever. This brought me consolation at the time of my dad's passing. We still miss them during out earthly journey, but we will see them again.
