He completed a residency in General Surgery at the University of South Alabama in 1972. He proudly served many communities in Arkansas, Alabama, and Mississippi during his career in General Surgery and Emergency Medicine.
His life was exemplified by service and patriotism, and he considered his roles as citizen, soldier, and surgeon his greatest work.
As a citizen, he was instrumental in the development of the Mobile County, Alabama EMS Council and the establishment of the Paramedic Emergency Medical Service in the Mobile Fire Department in 1972. He was honored to be the service’s first medical director. For this work, he was awarded the distinguished Mobilian of the Year Award in 1975.
As a soldier, he reached the rank of Brigadier General on Mobilization and commanded two U.S. Army Reserve Hospitals. Wounded in a devastating air raid on his company, he provided surgical care to his comrades without rest until relief arrived many hours later.
As a physician, he was dedicated to his community, attending to many during his remarkable 57 years in medicine. His last assignment was arguably his favorite, connecting with and caring for his fellow veterans in central Arkansas. In his later years, he dedicated himself to writing, publishing three books on military and medical history.
