Biography: COL Phillip A. Snodgrass, M.D. departed this life to be with our Lord on September 14, 2022.  He was born in Warren, AR on December 31, 1938 to William A. Snodgrass, Jr, M.D. and Mary Moseley Snodgrass.  He was a graduate of Little Rock Central High School (1956), Ouachita College (BS Chemistry 1960), and the University of Arkansas College of Medicine (MD 1964).  He completed a residency in General Surgery at the University of South Alabama in 1972.  He proudly served many communities in Arkansas, Alabama, and Mississippi during his career in General Surgery and Emergency Medicine.

His life was exemplified by service and patriotism, and he considered his roles as citizen, soldier, and surgeon his greatest work.
As a citizen, he was instrumental in the development of the Mobile County, Alabama EMS Council and the establishment of the Paramedic Emergency Medical Service in the Mobile Fire Department in 1972.  He was honored to be the service’s first medical director.  For this work, he was awarded the distinguished Mobilian of the Year Award in 1975.

As a soldier, he reached the rank of Brigadier General on Mobilization and commanded two U.S. Army Reserve Hospitals.  He received numerous awards for his service to our country, including a Purple Heart and Bronze Star for Valor during the Vietnam War.  Wounded in a devastating air raid on his company, he provided surgical care to his comrades without rest until relief arrived many hours later.

As a physician, he was dedicated to his community, attending to many during his remarkable 57 years in medicine.  His last assignment was arguably his favorite, connecting with and caring for his fellow veterans in central Arkansas.  In his later years, he dedicated himself to writing, publishing three books on military and medical history.

He was preceded in death by his parents and adoring brother, William A. Snodgrass, III.  He is survived by his wife, Sherrell, his five children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

A celebration of his life and visitation will take place at 10 a.m. on September 20, 2022 at Mount Holly Cemetery, 1200 Broadway St; Little Rock, AR .  This will be followed by a military graveside ceremony at 10:30 a.m.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to The Mercy Ships International, an organization he passionately supported.  Arrangements are under the direction of RuebelFuneralHome.com

I met dr. snodgrass when he was my doctor at the va hospital several years ago. As soon as he found out i was a former combat medic during the vietnam war, i became his instant friend. He told me all about his family life. his war experiences and showed me his collection of fountain pens and told me the story connected to each pen. dr. snodgrass was a wonderful person and physician and contributed greatly to mankind.

I am so sorry for your loss. Phillip was always very gracious to me regardless of when I visited or for how long. I first met Phillip in Newport while he was trying his best to improve the deplorable dog pound conditions giving his time and money to improve the lives of animals. He loved animals but he was also supporting Sherrell in her efforts. He was very proud of Sherrell often praising her skills and talents. He often told me she was his support.
Phillip was extremely intelligent and as evidenced by his medical career, very dedicated to improving lives, especially veterans. I remember the joy he seemed to get when helping Jessica or Kate with medical information while they were in medical school. The medical field has lost a great doctor and the family has lost a great man. Please take solace in knowing he is in heaven with no more pain or suffering.
With my deepest sympathy, Mary

Expressions of sympathy on the loss of your love one.
No doubt you have made fond memories, which would resurface from time to time. May those memories and God’s word in the Bible bring you comfort. God says that he is close to the brokenhearted and crushed in spirit. Truly sorry for your loss.

Dear Sherrell and family,
We are so sorry to hear of the passing of Phil. He has always been one of our favorite people. He had a big heart and always willing to lend a hand to others. He shared fascinating stories of his life experiences. Phil was always welcoming and kind to others. We enjoyed each of the books he has written, and Joe cherishes a signed copy of one of them. For good reason, he was proud of each of his books on military history and his experiences as physician and his years of community service. He was equally proud of his family. We share many happy memories of the times we were able to spend with him over the years. Our world has lost a bright light with Phil's passing. We pray God continues to provide His healing grace during this difficult time. With sympathy, Joe and Sandra
