Biography:

Rex Lynn Boothe, 75, passed away September 6, 2022 in Little Rock at the Colonel Glenn Nursing and Rehab facility.  Rex was born and raised in Smackover, Arkansas.

Rex retired from the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department (ARDOT) after 28 years of service in the relocation services department.  He graduated from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock with a BA in sociology in 1974.  He served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War era and was honorably discharged in 1970; he served his last 12 months in Thailand.  Rex was a 1964 graduate of Smackover High School.

The Boothe family attended Joyce City Baptist Church, where Rex was baptized; the church was right outside their back door.  Rex played the organ and piano at Joyce City church services for several years.  Rex received his confirmation in 1973 in the Trinity Episcopal Cathedral Church in Little Rock, Arkansas.  He had a strong private faith shown by his goodness to others.

Rex lived at the Quapaw Tower condominiums, surrounded by an art collection that reflected his love of South Arkansas and the delta; his heart always felt the pull of his roots from home.  Rex served eight years on the Quapaw Tower board as board president.  He never met a stranger and had many friends at Quapaw Tower.  Rex loved to read and listen to music and preferred it to watching television.  Rex enjoyed the arts, music, and good food.  He often ate his meals out with friends; he loved going to gallery openings, visiting with friends, and collecting antiques.  In 2001 Rex attended the inauguration of President William Jefferson Clinton with friend Andre Simon.

Preceding Rex in death are his parents of Smackover, Lillian Idell and Charles Russell Boothe.  Survivors include a brother, Lamar Boothe (Wanda) of Minden, LA; a sister Linda Dell Boothe (Steve) of Bentonville, AR; three nephews and nieces: Scott Boothe (Jamie), Pattie Jones (Frank), and Nancee Sproles (Paul); and six great-grand nephews and nieces.  Rex is also survived by longtime friend Jerry Lee Burrow of Arkadelphia, Arkansas.

A special thank you to George Finkle, Robert Treadway, Dr. Gladwin Connell and especially Jerry Burrow for their loving care for Rex during his final months and days.

A memorial service will be held at Ruebel Funeral Home in Little Rock Saturday, 2:00 PM, September 10, 2022.  Interment will be made on a later day at the Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery at North Little Rock.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to ALSAC/St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, (800) 805-5856, www.stjude.org

I met Rex through Gladwin and Vera when he was fighting his battle with throat cancer. He needed someone to clean for him and so I did that for him for the last few years.
I was so worried about him during that first year as he battled the same cancer that had just taken my own father! (That sure hit close to home!) But, Rex overcame that! Hallelujah!
I was so happy to see him up and about and enjoying time with his friends again! He would smile so big when I reminded him to take his cane with him as he was walking out the door! He always looked sharp walking out the door, too, in his crisply ironed khaki pants and white shirt with a cute pin on the collar in the form of a lizard, lady bug, bee, etc with some bling on it!
I remember being upset when my husband called me one day about my little dog having to have emergency surgery. I was at Rex's cleaning that day and he saw I was pretty upset, so he came and hugged me and told me she'd be all right and he was right!
I will miss you, Rex! You've earned your wings, my friend! Now, FLY! Until we meet again! Please hug my daddy for me!
Love, Tammy

I was so saddened to hear of Rex’s passing. My father was the pastor of Joyce City Baptist Church where Rex played the piano and the organ for a number of years. He lived across the road and his sister Linda was a good friend. I spent many days and nights in their home. So many happy memories. I ran into Rex at the Rep Theater a few years ago and got the biggest hug. He was a special man.

We had the pleasure of meeting Rex a few yeas ago when he let us adopt his mother’s beautiful dachshund, Missy. He was a lovely, kind man.
