Biography: James William Monk, Jr. (“Jim”) passed away on Thursday March 17, 2022. He was born on August 17, 1947 in Hot Springs, Arkansas to James W. Monk and Birdie Davidson Monk.  Jim graduated from Hot Springs High School and then from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville with an Engineering Degree and an MBA. Jim loved Fayetteville and everything about his college days, sharing good times with his Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity brothers. Friendships made there lasted his entire lifetime.
Jim’s was a life of service in every way possible. He took great honor in serving his country and retired as a Lt. Col, U.S. Army Reserves.  Here, too, he made many enduring relationships.

To say Jim served his family is an understatement. A devoted husband, daddy, father-in-law and granddad, he loved his family like nothing else and showed and said it every single day.   His parents and sister, Kay Monk Goodwin predeceased him.  He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Lynn McCleary Monk, and daughters Sarah Monk Duke and Susannah Monk Willett.  His love grew to include sons-in-law Steven Duke and Reed Willett and the joys of his later years, grandsons Andrew and Bennett Duke.  Family was his greatest blessing.

Jim served his friends and customers.  He spent his entire professional life as a mechanical engineer in the HVAC industry.  He was very active in ASHRAE, a worldwide professional HVAC association in which he held every office.  He especially enjoyed mentoring young people getting started in the industry.  Jim was instrumental in creating the Heating & Air Conditioning Licensing Board for the state of Arkansas. He was always willing to share his expertise with those who needed it.

Jim served his church, Pulaski Heights United Methodist, in a variety of capacities including the Board of Trustees, numerous building committees, van driver, usher and the TV Board, handling the audio duties for the Sunday morning television service. He especially loved time spent coaching numerous PHUMC youth basketball teams.  He was a member of the Newton Good News Sunday School Class and the WILD DOGS Bible study.

Jim enjoyed many pleasures in his life---world travel, the smell of the ocean, a good cigar, a Friday martini, calling the Hogs, golfing at the Country Club of Little Rock (a love/hate relationship), and especially time spent on Lake Hamilton. He treasured his family and friends and loved good company. Jim’s was a life of steadfast service, and a deeply rooted faith in his God.  His was a life well spent.

A memorial service will be held at Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church on Friday March 25th at 10:00 with a reception following in the Great Hall.  In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the McCleary/Monk Endowment Fund at the church.4823 Woodlawn, Little Rock, Arkansas 72205.  Arrangements are under the direction of RuebelFuneralHome.com

Jim was a contractor for me on numerous projects during my tenure in Arkansas. A true professional through and through. Always joyful, a representation of a man with a strong faith, he was a pleasure to speak with and work with.
May God bring peace and joy to Jim's family, many friends, and those of us who knew him as “Colonel”.
Blessings on them all.

Jim Monk was my friend and fraternity brother for 50 years. There were none better. I will miss him. He was also an inspiration. For 40 years or so he was also my "go-to" expert for commercial HVAC pricing and technical problems. We spent a good bit of time together and it was always pleasant and informative. Condolences to his family and many friends and all the Lambda Chi brothers. I will think of you often, Brother Monk.

To Lynn & Family,

I feel privileged to say that I was a friend of Jim Monk...through +25 years in the Army Reserves. We both where blessed to have daughters, to talk about.
I saw him as a family-man, a servant, a leader, a patriot and a believer.

Claim 1Pet 1:3-9 in his absence, he was born-again into an eternal inheritance...with Christ in heaven.

Sharon and I are praying for the family in your loss.

Blessings,
Harvey (McCone)

I had the pleasure of working with Jim for 13 years. He lived his faith every day in his business relationships and friendships, and treated all of us so kindly and with great integrity. He was always fun to be around, and I’ll always remember his cheerful “Good Morning!!”, which set the tone to start every day. My deepest heartfelt sympathy and condolences go out to Lynn, Sarah, Susannah and the other family members and friends. Jim, you will truly be missed!

It is very sad to hear of Jim’s passing. He has been my good friend for many years as an HVAC professional. We were a couple of the “old guys” at ASHRAE meetings and kidded each other about our golf games. He loved his family and his profession. I will miss him very much. Prayers for his family and his many friends. Goodby Colonel.

I had the privilege of serving with Jim in the Army Reserve making many inspection trips throughout the 122 ARCOM and 90th Regional Support Command. He was a great citizen soldier. What an honor! Thanks for your friendship and service.

Lynn,
You and Jim were one of the great couples I have known. There are many thoughts and prayers with you and your family. How fortunate for each of you to have the other, as you walked life's path together. Jim was a great guy -- someone I have considerable respect for. He was one of those rare individuals everyone liked. My heart was warmed and uplifted, whenever I encountered him. May the wonderful memories you carry, provide comfort as you and your family move forward.
