Biography: Mary Constance (Connie) Bowen, age 95, of Little Rock, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2022. She was born on March 30, 1926, in Muskogee, OK, to Lawrence and Beatrice Wanasek.
She is preceded in death by her husband William H. Bowen, her sister B.J. Cohenour, brothers Buddy and Bob Wanasek, and grandson John Barker. She is survived by her three children: Cynthia Blanchard (Charlie), Scott Bowen (Mary Ellen), and Patty Barker; eight grandchildren: Mary Pat Blanchard Hardman (John), Chip Blanchard (Leslie), Charles Scott Bowen, Lesley Bowen Benjamin (Paul), Andrew Bowen, Will Barker (Lauren), Henry Barker, and Mary Katherine Barker; and seven great-grandchildren.
Connie attended the University of Arkansas, where she received a bachelor’s degree despite the minor distraction of meeting Bill Bowen her junior year as she helped register returning GIs for school. They married the next summer and enjoyed 67 years of marriage together, until Bill’s death in 2014.
Connie was active in the community, supporting her Chi Omega sorority, P.E.O., the 20th Century Club and other civic groups, as well as First United Methodist Church of Little Rock, which she and Bill joined upon moving to Little Rock in 1953. She will be missed by her tennis and golf groups, her many bridge-playing friends, and her adoring children, grands, and greats!
Private family services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 723 Center Street, Little Rock, AR 72201, or online at FUMCLR.org.
Just wanted to reach out to you and your family to let you know I have you guys in my thoughts and prayers. Your mother was such a special lady. Our paths crossed many years ago when a mutual friend from her church passed away, she provided me such a wonderful welcome while I was attending this funeral. This meant a lot to me then and as I read her obituary I believe she provided the same welcome to so many other strangers throughout her life. She will be missed, but I believe she will be remembered in such a powerful way through experiences such as this. Blessings and love to each of you!
