Biography: Gary Kent Jones, 82, of Little Rock, passed away peacefully on August 28th of complications from pancreatic cancer.

A memorial service will be held on October 9, 2021, at 10 o’clock at Our Lady of the Holy Souls Catholic Church, followed by a celebration of Gary’s life at Dugan’s Pub on 3rd Street.

Gary was born in Grannis, Arkansas to Hugh and Zada Jones on September 28, 1938.  He went to high school in Fort Smith, where he met and later married Jean Lee Pollan.  Together they raised four daughters and were married for more than 30 years before separating in 1992. After earning a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Arkansas, Gary worked for the Social Security Administration for nearly 30 years.  He met Kathy Powers while working for SSA and they became instant friends.  For the past 15 years Kathy was Gary’s companion and when his health began to deteriorate, she was his devoted caregiver.

Gary was an avid reader, particularly of World War II history; he loved country music, Elvis, and in his younger years, dancing. He enjoyed golfing until his vision deteriorated and was a die-hard Razorbacks and St. Louis Cardinals fan. He loved nothing more than betting the horses and drinking beer with his large circle of friends and was lucky enough one year to make a trip to the Kentucky Derby. He could discuss politics and other serious matters with great insight. He cared deeply for his family and friends. He was grateful for the times he spent, especially lately, with his friends Mary Alice Spann, Becky Crosland, and Kathy Jennings.

Gary is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Jean Jones; his children, Cindy Jones, Diana Jones, Joni Jones Culver (Stuart Culver), and Karen Jones; his brothers, John Jones and Hugh Michael Jones; his grandchildren, Trey Edrington, Elise Edrington, Elizabeth Edrington, Emma Culver, and Nicholas Culver; his great grandson Leandro Vasquez, and his companion Kathy Powers.

Gary was one of the good guys. I had a major problem with social security about 30 years ago. Gary fixed it with one phone call. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

We always loved seeing Goobs at Crazee's when we came to Little Rock and at Oaklawn too. He was so welcoming and always had a funny story to tell me about Wade or one of his brothers. May he Rest In Peace. God Bless the family with warm memories. Kelly and Wade

Gary was one of those people that pass through your life that you will never forget. We shared some great times together for lots of years. We had a great group of friends and enjoyed going to Oaklawn, The Pitcher, Cash McCool's, or someone's house and we might discuss anything or everything. Gary was a friend and I'll never forget him. Rest in peace Goobs.

Gary and I worked together at SSA many years ago. Although I cannot remember the last time I saw him, I always felt like if I ran into him, we could pick up where we left off. He was a real friend and I am saddened at his passing.
