Biography: Mary Davis Wetzel, the one and only for me, her husband, Frederick S. “Tripp” Wetzel III, died at home on July 21st, 2021 surrounded by her family.

Mary was born May 18th, 1951 in Little Rock, AR at St. Vincent’s Infirmary, nine days before I was born in the same hospital.  We spent 55 wonderful years together, 48 of those years we were married.

Mary attended Hall High School where she made her lifelong friend, Barbara Davis Henry.  After High School, she attended Arkansas State University, where she met another lifelong friend, Cydney E. Smith.  Mary taught elementary school for 30 years after graduating from Arkansas State University. Mary interrupted her teaching career to have her children, Lucie Elizabeth Minor, Luke Stearns Wetzel, and Floy Claire Laney.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents John L. Davis and Lucie M. Davis of Little Rock. Mary is survived by her husband Frederick S. “Tripp” Wetzel, III; Lucie and Chris Minor of Little Rock and their sons Max and McCoy; Luke and Katherine Wetzel of Bentonville; and Claire and Austin Laney and their daughter Charlotte of Lake Tapps, WA; cousins Billy Koon, Stephen Koon, Becky Henley, and Pat Davis.

During her life, Mary developed many long lasting friendships.  Her family wishes to thank those special friends Barbara Davis, Cydney E. Smith, Dorothy and Paul Young, Vickie and Greg Hart, Randy and Gay Wyatt.  Her family also is thankful for the wonderful and caring treatment from the doctors and nurses at CARTI, and Kindred Hospice Care.

Tripp, Lucie, Luke and Claire,
The Wiedower family is so sad to learn of Mary’s passing. She was a lovely person and has left this world much too soon. Mary and I have known each other since the late 1950s - Jefferson, Forest Heights, Hall and PHUMC - and although our paths didn’t cross often, when they did I so enjoyed catching up with her and your family. I hope you will find comfort in your happy memories and knowing that she is no longer in pain.

I remember Mary from Forest Heights but got to know her better at PHUMC. We taught confirmation together (on purpose) when Claire and Greg were in the 6th grade.
She was great and I’m so sad that she has died. My deepest sympathy to her family. And Tripp, your obituary is wonderful.

I’m so sorry to hear of Mary’s passing. I loved Mary from the start of our friendship at Meadowcliff Elementary— she was so down to earth and so fun. Over the past 25 + years, I’d run into Mary and take up where we left off last…she was that kind of special friend. Praying for all of Mary’s family during this difficult time.

Mary played such a major role in Taylor’s early life. He felt as at home at your house as he did at his own home. Mary was a warm, loving person, and even though I wasn’t around her much in her later years, I always felt an instant connection if I ran into her at the grocery store or shopping. I am profoundly sad. I can but imagine the enormous hole she has left in all of your hearts. I am praying for your comfort.

My sincere condolences in the loss of your beautiful wife, mother, and grandmother. I had the honor of working with Mary for a number of years at Meadowcliff Elementary and enjoyed hearing stories of the family she adored. Since our retirement I’ve kept up with her through stories of her Mary/Michelle/Melinda or ‘3M’s’ lunches and how much fun she was. She will be missed by many who enjoyed her personality and quiet sense of humor.

We are so sorry to hear of Mary's passing. Even though we don't see our "old" Wesley Sunday School Class friends very often, we value those friendships. We have many wonderful memories of the Wesley Class and raising our children together at PHUMC. Tripp, you and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers.
