He was an Arkansas Arts Center trustee and Arkansas Symphony Orchestra officer and director and pro bono lawyer.  He served two years as president of the Woodruff Elementary PTA.

He organized and raised funds for the original Friends of the Zoo, Inc. and served as its first president.  He was an active leader and fund raiser for Hendrix College.

He was a volunteer for progressive causes and candidates.  He helped save and restore three historic buildings in the Quapaw Quarter.  He served as a volunteer and trustee at Temple B’nai Israel.

Chris lived in our 4-plex years ago. I was able to get to know him then and how respectful and kind he was. He sent a laminated copy of my daughter-on-law wedding article from the paper. These were the small things that added up to his great character.

Seeing that Chris had passed away brought a flood of memories of all the years of good times spent playing with Mike and Chris from toddler years to adult hood. My husband and I send our deepest sympathies to you, Nan, Mike, and all of your other family members. You are in our prayers.

Dear Nan and Family:

We are truly sorry for this loss but are confident that many happy memories will help to comfort you at this difficult time.

Over the last 40 years we had occasions to interact with Chris and often thought of him if we were looking for an honest and caring answer or referral for a legal issue.

Chris was warm, caring, willing, ethical and honorable. He will always be remembered with fondness and respect.

I'm sure there are many people who feel this way and that's a wonderful tribute to the character, humanity and morals of Chris Barrier.

I began my career in law working for the Mitchell firm back in 1980, and came to know Chris back in those days. Over the years (after I returned to Monticello to open my own law office) I would have contact with Chris from time to time. He was always helpful, and a perfect gentleman in every way, and always wore a smile. My condolences to Mrs. Barrier and family.

I loved Chris Barrier. We spent a lot of time together over the years doing Hendrix stuff. We found each other amusing and there are worse foundations for a friendship. Melissa and I were dating when he met her at a fancy dinner at Hendrix to which I was somehow invited. The festivities carried on to the next day. Chris and I were both part of a procession. As we got in line he pulled me over. “I like her,” he said while sticking his finger in my face. “Don’t you mess this up.” Or words to that general effect. I took his wise advice. I didn’t mess it up. Rest In Peace buddy.

To Nan and family--We are saddened to learn of Chris's death. Chris was always kind, gentle and helpful to us and we will miss him and his quick smile.

Regrettably, we are out of town and will not be able to attend his memorial service, though we will be thinking of him and of his family and of his kindness and good deeds.

May his memory be a blessing.
