Pat’s letters were incomparable. I hate writing that in the past tense, hate to realize we won’t be getting any more of those inimitable closely typed missives.
He wrote about the classes he was teaching, his writing projects (one on media coverage of the Challenger disaster), his wide-ranging extracurricular reading, especially biographies, which he described in often fascinating detail. How could he read so much?! Then there were the epicurean meats, cheeses, cakes, and candies he ordered by mail during every holiday season. Political commentary, increasingly exasperated. Reminiscences of living on Kodiak Island as a boy. The American high school he attended in Venezuela. A completely delighted account of his not-so-long-ago trip to Paris—the streets, the sights, the language, and of course the food.
Kowabunga! Pat, we miss you.

I am speechless and heartbroken at your passing, for I thought we still had time to talk, to pass truly bad jokes back and forth, and for you to continue to be that special person in my life: colleague, mentor, and trusted friend.
You are the purest spirit I ever had the grace to know, able to speak of truth without vexation or politics, simply to speak of it with no dog in the fight. Oh, how I will miss our phone conversations and emails!!
I hope, before the disease took you, that you found the peace for which you were searching. You have surely achieved it now.

Very sad to hear of Pat's passing. We so enjoyed our visits over the years. Until we meet again good Sir. John & Suzie Stutzer (Cousin)
