Biography:
Donald Baker Hurst passed peacefully at home Friday, May 14. He was born August 26, 1942 to R.D. and Francis Baker Hurst in Little Rock. Don was preceded in death by both parents. He is survived by his wife, Bernadette Shane Sahene Hurst, son Justin (Rachel), daughter Kylie Sluder (Mike), grandsons Jacob Sluder and Byron Hurst, and two brothers, Joe and Bill Hurst.
Don was proud graduate of UALR where he was a Charter Member of the Kapa Sigma fraternity and lettered in 3 sports: baseball, tennis, and basketball. He was the captain for the basketball team while he attended college and held records for several years at UALR. He was also a success on the baseball field and signed a semi-pro contract with the Chicago White Socks and played for two years after graduating college.
Don’s love of sports started at an early age and went beyond school. He was a founding member of the “Chore Boys” American Legion Team in Little Rock. Don was an avid golfer. He also enjoyed coaching many different baseball, soccer, and basketball teams over his lifetime.
Don served in the Air Force National Guard. He served for four years. He loved flying.
Don entered the restaurant business with some friends and his very first assignment sent him to Freeport Bahamas where he met the love of his life, Shane. They returned to the states, grew their restaurant business and their family. Don was particularly associated with Coy’s Steak House in Hot Springs. If you have ever had one of Coy’s famous steaks, Don probably came by your table to welcome you.
Don and Shane were both members of FUMC Maumelle. For several years they enjoyed teaching Sunday School together.
As we all know Don loved his sports, flying, fishing, tinkering, his Hog Shirts, but most importantly he treasured his family. He gave all he had to Shane, Justin, Kylie, Jacob, and Byron. His sudden passing leaves an empty space impossible to fill.
