Biography: Dr. R. L. Qualls of Little Rock peacefully departed this life on February 15, 2021. He was born and raised in Burnsville, Mississippi. He graduated from Burnsville High School where he earned the title of “Corn King” for his FFA research on agricultural production. He graduated from Mississippi State University, earning a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree in Agricultural Economics. During his extraordinary career, R.L. served in numerous leadership positions including: President and Chairman of the Board of the University of the Ozarks; Director of the Department of Finance and Administration and cabinet secretary in former Governor Bill Clinton’s administration; Executive Vice President of Worthen Banking Corporation; President and CEO of Baldor Electric Company; Lead Independent Director for Bank of the Ozarks; and Co-Chairman of the Taylor Companies, an investment banking and mergers acquisitions firm headquartered in Washington, D.C.  In recognition of his accomplishments in business, he directed the Executive in Residence programs at University of the Ozarks, St. Gregory’s University, and the University of North Alabama.

R.L was a 32nd degree Master Mason of Burnsville, Mississippi.

As a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon and a lifelong Bulldog, Mississippi State University was near and dear to his heart. He served as Chairman of the Development Committee of the Foundation Board and served on the Executive Advisory Board of the College of Business where he helped establish the Entrepreneurial Center.  One of the greatest honors of his life was being named the 2018 Mississippi State University National Alumnus of the Year for his distinctive achievements in business, economics, education, industry, and politics.

I am so sorry to see this!! I was in college when Dr. Qualls was president of the College of the Ozarks in Clarksville. I had many opportunities to work with him while in college - what a wonderful man! He was one of those that made you feel you could do anything if you just put your mind to it. Prayers for all his family and friends. He will be a part of my college memories forever.

Stephanie and Family,

Words just can't say enough. Know that I mourn with you and pray for your strength through this painful loss. I have so many great memories of times with you and your dad and will always remember our many conversations about life and politics, his impatience with our youthful shenanigans when you lived on Club Rd. and the wit and wisdom he shared. He will be missed. Hugs to all of you.

A great humanitarian has entered into his kingdom to join so many other saints. Mr. Qualls was such a gentleman and by his side his ever beautiful wife.
I will miss his rhetoric and love of music.
