Biography: Dr. Lamar Williamson Riggs, age 81, died peacefully at his home on November 22, 2020. He was born on January 12, 1939 in Little Rock, AR to Martha Williamson Riggs and John A. Riggs, Jr. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bob Cress, Hayes McClerkin, Norma Riggs, as well as the love of his life, Linda Garner Riggs. He is survived by sons Jason T. Riggs and Jeffery W. Riggs, brother, Jack Riggs (Lila), sister, Lee Cress, sister, Lil McClerkin, Judith A. O’Donnell, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Lamar attended Little Rock public schools and graduated in 1956 from Little Rock Central High. He attended Davidson College where he graduated Cum Laude in 1960. After college, Lamar spent two years in the U.S. Army rising to the rank of First Lieutenant as a Battery Executive Officer.

Following his discharge from the Army, Lamar started his journey in the medical profession. He attended the University of California, Berkeley (Pre-Med), and graduated from Johns Hopkins University with his M.D. in 1968. Lamar completed his postgraduate training in Internal Medicine at Ohio State University Hospital and his residency in Critical Care at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA. Lamar was Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Anesthesiology, and Critical Care Medicine; he was fond of saying 3 Boards were enough!

Following his time in Boston, Lamar moved to Webster, New Hampshire, and founded Concord Internal Medicine (located in Concord, NH). After retirement, he moved to Meredith, NH and enjoyed his time at Lake Winnipesaukee. In 2008, at the urging of friends and family, he moved back to Little Rock.

The family wishes to thank Arkansas Hospice as well as Lamar’s caregivers who provided such loving care for him over the past few years: Shawnda Washington, Kendra Campbell, John Hughes, Bryan Vault, Sherrita Campbell, and Ernie Brooks. The family especially want to thank Malise “Mo” Perrilliat, his beloved friend and caregiver, and her dog Lucy, who Lamar always referred to as his grand dog.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, services will be held at a later date for family only. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra (arkansassymphony.org) or the Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance (arhungeralliance.org).

My belated condolences to the entire Riggs family on the passing of Buddy. We were first cousins and though he was 11 years older than me, I always loved his laugh and smile. His recollections of Mama Charlotte have always been a favorite read as he caught he sound, smell and love of Monticello, Arkansas and Mama Charlotte. I’m sorry to have lost contact with him as we all grew and moved away. Edith Williamson Farrell

Lamar hired me in July 1980 to work in the office of Concord Pulmonary Medicine. He was a great boss and I enjoyed my job for the next twenty years. My sympathy to all of his family.

My acquaintance with lamar goes back to the fifth grade at Pulaski Heights. We became close after his return to Little Rock several years back. This meant weekly lunches, bike rides at 6 AM and visiting in Massachusetts and New Hampshire with Linda.
Lamar was always a gentleman. He was informed, well spoken and always met people with a smile which I can see today. He will be missed and remembered fondly by everyone.

June and I were saddened to see Lamar's Obituary in today's paper. Our deepest sympathy goes out to his family. Lamar was a true gentleman and was a pleasure to be with. We loved to be with him and Linda, especially when she would prepare a lovely dinner party for several friends. He will now be consuming the dinner that has been prepared for him by his Lord in heaven. He and Linda will now be together again. May they Rest in Peace!

Peace and comfort are our wishes to family and friends of this gentle, intelligent, quiet, and warm man. Although we met Lamar only a few years before he moved back to Little Rock, he quickly became an admired and treasured friend whose company we valued. Seeing him weekly at church meant a regular greeting and sustained contact. He has been missed greatly with our less frequent then no live attendance. Seeing his marriage to Linda brought much joy and, at her young death, much grief. He is among the saints we've known whose journeys ended this hard year.
