I knew Embry at Randolph Macon our first 2 years of college. One spring vacation we traveled to Little Rock by train and trans Texas airlines to visit her mother who was reading The Guns of August. Then we traveled to Jackson, Miss where Embry took interest tests with her Aunt Baucum who wanted to know what berg is this. In Little Rock we laughed a lot before going to sleep. I was very impressed with her mother who worked for the Arkansas Gazette and her father was a judge at Nuremberg. My mother liked her at a college weekend. I called her when I lived north of Shelby, NC. She wanted to know how in the world I was?”

I have fond memories of when she and her husband of 36 years, Joe Smreker, my brother, lived in Austin. They seemed to always have some project going on. When she and Joe bought a house in Austin that came equipped with a fish pond. They both made improving the pond a fun project. Both loved wine and wine trips to Napa valley. Sadly Joe passed away to soon in 2003 and it was tough on Embry. Now they are together again.

So saddened to learn of Embry's death. I first knew her at Randolph-Maccon Woman's College. I loved her dry wit. And it was always a delight to hear her take on things. I renewed my friendship with her in the Aesthetic Club in Little Rock. She distinguished herself there in her thoughtful presentations and her regular minutes as Club Recording Secretary. We will all really miss her. Catherine C.

I've lost my best friend, but the world has lost one of its greatest characters.
She prevailed in having fun in spite of life's hard knocks of which she had far more than her share. I think she'd want everyone to find ways to make
life more fun, and a fine wine to go along with it would be a wise companion choice. I'll miss her all the rest of my days. Save me a seat, Em---next to you.
