Biography: Mary Ellen Coburn, age 82, of Little Rock, Arkansas, died October 17, 2020.  She was born and raised in Bauxite, Arkansas by her grandparents, Jim and Della Hopkins.  She graduated from Henderson State Teachers College in 1961 and received a Masters Degree from the University of Arkansas in 1972.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, her mother Helen Hammond, and a brother Joe Mike Hammond.  She is survived by her son David Coburn, and his wife Susan Coburn, of McKinney, Texas; her son Matt Coburn, and his wife Deena Coburn, of Benton, Arkansas; four grandchildren:  Coy, Kristen, Maddison, and Kaci Coburn; and a sister Sara Lee of Cabot, Arkansas.

Mary Ellen’s first teaching job was in El Centro, California.  She and her family moved back to Benton, Arkansas, where she taught for several years including time at Little Rock Central High School.  In 1982 she took a hiatus from teaching to run a fashion consulting business.  She authored a book, Simply Stunning Dressing from the Inside Out.  She marketed the book to other consultants across the country and used the book in seminars as a training manual while working for J. C. Penny in the mid-south region.  Mary Ellen returned to teaching at Cabot High School in 1990 until she retired in 2003.  She taught for a total of 38 years.

Mary Ellen was privileged to be part of the Alanon Family Group for more than 30 years, and her Saint Margaret’s dream group meant a great deal to her.  She owed a great debt of gratitude to the Episcopal Church for introducing her to the practice of centering prayer.  Most importantly, it taught her the concept of reason as it applied to the Christian faith.  These affiliations helped her become a more tolerant and compassionate person.  She appreciated all things beautiful.  Beauty lifted her spirit.

There will be a small graveside service for family members and close friends on Monday, November 2 at 9:00 a.m. in the St. Mark's Episcopal Church Columbarium. To help keep everyone safe, please wear a mask and practice social distancing.

It is with deep regret that I read of Mrs. Coburn's passing as she was the first teacher that greeted me in her classroom at Central High, myself having just transferred from Hall High in 1971. She inspired her students to do better and to excel at whatever they were studying. I learned much from this wonderful lady and I know there is a special place in heaven for those that inspired us to be good, productive citizens. All gods best to you Mrs. Coburn!

Mary Ellen and I were friends from church and other activities over many years. We shared teaching anecdotes, participation in Al-Anon, phone calls, lunches, and tea at her lovely apartment. She was a delight to know and will be missed. Condolences to her family. Tina Bodiak

Mary Ellen understood the sacredness of Beauty and epitomized a beautiful soul. We became close friends at a difficult time in my life when I began a recovery process in Alanon, and her companionship and love helped me heal. She was a woman of deep faith, and we shared a love of the Episcopal Church, dream work, reading and movies. My condolences to her family and her friends. I have great faith that Mary Ellen is finally at peace. Rest in Love, my friend!

Mary Ellen was my friend, my teaching compatriot, and my commuting buddy while we worked together at Cabot High School. She was a thoughtful, spiritual, smart and compassionate woman and could tell a funny story with the best of them! She left impressions I will carry with me always. My deepest sympathies to Matt and David and the rest of the family.

Mrs. Coburn was my 5th grade teacher at Howard Perrin Elementary School in Benton, AR, a long time ago. She was a very nice lady and a good teacher. I'm sorry I lost track of her as I moved on to Jr. High and have just found her again when it is too late. I will keep her family in my thoughts and prayers. You have my deepest sympathy for your loss.
