Biography:

Mary Margaret York Shermer was born August 13, 1946 in Texarkana, Arkansas to William Daniel York & Frances Williams York. Mary Margaret passed in the loving arms of her daughter to her peaceful rest on August 11, 2020.

Mary was raised on the family’s farm in Little River county and Ashdown where she attended school. She achieved a degree in elementary education at Hendrix College in 1968.  She received her Masters in education at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville where she began her teaching career.  She would go on to teach in the Russellville school district.  Later she used her creative gifts to start her own catering business, York Family Catering.

“MM” as she was often called was the most loving soul.  Words cannot describe her kindness and tender nature.  She was always smiling, and her heart of gold was felt by everyone she encountered. She deeply loved her family, her friends, her pets, and nature.  She was an avid kayaker and runner.  She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Russellville and was active in Regional Aids Interfaith Network and Meals On Wheels.  She was a member of P.E.O.

Mary was the most loving and nurturing mother to her one and only daughter.  She precociously taught Susanna about Deepak Chopra, Marianne Williamson, transcendental meditation, and the importance of positive visualization.  She was ahead of her time as an open-minded progressive woman who loved all people.

Mary Margaret is survived by her daughter, Dr. Susanna Elizabeth Shermer of Little Rock, daughter-in-law Mechan Shermer, grandson Hudson Shermer, brother Dan York of Ashdown, nephews Will and Starnes York, many special cousins, and adoring friends.

A garden memorial service will be held at Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church in Little Rock at 10:00 a.m. Saturday August 22nd.  Due to the current pandemic, a list of attendees is required prior to the service.  Please contact Susanna if you plan to attend. A graveside service will take place at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, August 23 at Ashdown Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her honor to Heifer International or the Humane Society of Pulaski County.

Susanna, I, too, was a year behind your mother at Hendrix. She was one of a special group of people who were the kindest of anyone I have met at any time in my life. Like the Stallings above, I loved your mother's name and when I had a daughter named her Mary-Margaret...in my case it was both in honor of your mother and her friendship to me that one year after which I transferred as well as after my daughter's two grandmothers, Mary and Margaret. I am thinking about your with love and wish you peace.

Mary Margaret was a gentle, kind, loving soul. The first thing that comes to me when I think of her is her genuine smile, all the way up to her sparkling eyes. She will be missed. I’m sure Aunt Frances and Uncle Bill were glad to see her, along with so many others. ❤️

Susanna and family, I am so saddened to hear of Mary Margaret's death. We all lived on the same floor , of different dorms, at Hendrix, and she was such a joy to know. Always smiling and laughing and such a wonderful friend to so many. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time, and that we pray you will find smiles through your memories, strength through your family, and peace through your faith. We share in your loss.

We are so sorry to read of Mary Margaret’s death. She was a beautiful lady inside and out. We love the York’s. Our girls adored Mrs York and loved to go see her at the farm. She’d let them play with her adding machine in the office, and anything else they liked to do.
Dan is a dear friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this time. God bless.
