Allan B. Mendel

Allan B. Mendel

Jul 29th, 1945 - Jul 10th, 2020

Biography: With tremendous sadness, we mourn the death of Allan B Mendel, who died on July 10, 2020.  Born in Little Rock on July 29, 1945, to Jane and Ed Mendel, he was the oldest of four siblings.   A proud 1964 graduate of Hall High School, he maintained those friendships throughout his lifetime.  He was a graduate of the University of Texas, El Paso and SMU Graduate School of Banking.  In 1990, after a 20 year career in banking, he founded his own investment firm, Mendel Capitol Management.

Allan was a warm, caring, and generous man who volunteered with many organizations and was on and president of many boards.  He loved his community, and he loved his family.  Called “Bear” by his grandchildren, that name stuck with others too, as he was a soft-spoken, loveable bear of a man.

He cherished his friendships and went to lunch every day with the same group of men for 30 years.  He delighted as they played a numbers game to see who would pick up the tab.  He held a monthly poker game at his house, where he was always “the banker.”  He joined the same investment club his father had been in and stated that at one time he was the youngest member and now he was one of the oldest. He loved going to work every day and was proud of his partners Maureen Ruggiero and Geoffrey Niebaum.

Allan is survived by his wife of 41 years, Carol Faupel Mendel, who never ceased to delight him.  He leaves behind two daughters whom he adored and was extremely proud of, Sarah Mendel Johnson (Len) and Naomi Stratton; two grandchildren that meant the world to him, Katie and Chloe Stratton.  Of all his lifetime honors, he was most proud of being called “Bear” by his two favorite grandchildren.  His siblings, Anne Mendel (Mark Henry); Eddie Mendel (Barbara); and David Mendel; along with their families. He is also survived by his friend and the mother of his children Jacqui Lincoln.

In light of the global pandemic, there will be no service, but the family has felt surrounded by love from their friends and community.  Allan would be touched by this outpouring of support.  Memorials may be made to the Jewish Federation of Arkansas (18 Corporate Hill Dr. #204 Little Rock, 72205) or to Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund (PO Box 925, Little Rock, 72203).

Arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home, ruebelfuneralhome.com

Dearest Carol, It sincerely saddened us to hear that Allen had passed away earlier this month. Our whole family thought the world of you all. We bring up your names any time we tell the story of our ducks, Lucy and Ethel, we brought to live with you all. You notified that Ethel was actually a “Ricky”, adding more fun to the story. Allen was a very fine man and he will be missed by everyone who knew him. The world was better with him in it. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and want you to know we are thinking of you. All good wishes,
Robert and Draxie Rogers, Maumelle, AR

Oh Carol, Buddy and I are so sorry for your loss.
We didn’t know him very well, but from all of the comments and the obituary, he must have been an amazing person. 41 years is a long time, so it is like losing a part of yourself. You and your family are in our prayers.
Sincerely,

Carol and Family, We are so saddened to learn of Allan's passing. He was my boss for about eight years but has been a friend for around forty years. I have enjoyed getting to visit with him over the past few years at the "Old Bankers" luncheons. Those quarterly luncheons were his suggestion after our last reunion in 2011. We will miss him. May God bless you all with His wondrous peace. RIP, Allan.

Allan, you've been such a tremendous source of encouragement, kindness, mentorship, and friendship in my life. I will miss your gracious presence in this life. God delights in placing people in our lives whos example helps to challenge us to be better, kinder, humbler; in this respect, your example has shaped parts of who I am in more ways than you could know. Carol, Naomi, and Sarah, I love you all and hope you will not hesitate to let me know if I can lend a hand with anything, especially at this moment. You will not leave my prayers. My deepest condolences to each of you.
