Biography: Evelyn Greene McCoy, age 89, of Washington, D.C. died June 25, 2007. Evelyn was born in Hope, Arkansas. Her parents were John H. Greene and Lois McMath Greene. At the age of nine her family moved to Little Rock. She graduated from Little Rock High School in 1935 second in her class. She subsequently received a B.A. in 1939 from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville where she was vice president of Chi Omega Sorority, president of Octagon (now Mortar Board), and elected Campus Queen her senior year. In 1941 she married Travis W. McCoy, Jr. and began a life of service to family, friends and community. In 1940-41 she worked for the Arkansas Democrat as the entertainment editor and wrote a column called, "Hollywood Hi-De-Ho". She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Little Rock, where she served on the Altar Guild, the WSCS, and the Worship Committee. Her community service included many organizations, including the Junior League of Little Rock, the Fine Arts Club, United Fund, Community Chest, the Working Women's Home, and the 1 st Ed. TV Assn. She served as president of the Junior League during the 1957 Little Rock school crisis. In 1960 she became a member of the Board of Trustees for what would become the Arkansas Arts Center in 1963. At that time the Arts Center was still in the organizational phase as a combined project of the Museum of Fine Arts Club. Evelyn served on the Board from 1960 to 1967. In 1967 the Arts Center decided it needed a librarian for its collection of 200 books, and Evelyn agreed to be part of the staff, having completed 40 hours of graduate work in library science. Evelyn's official title was Senior Director for Special Projects, Volunteer Activities, and Library. The library, under Evelyn's supervision grew from 200 to 7,000 books. Evelyn served as Senior Director for 24 years and in recognition for her professional achievement, received the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Memorial Award in 1977. She also joined the Arkansas Library Association, serving in many capacities, the most memorable being as chair of the Intellectual Freedom Committee of 1986. For her efforts in standing up against censorship, Evelyn received the Frances P. Neal Award from the Association in 1991. Evelyn remained a sustaining member of the Junior League and was named Sustainer of the Year in 1984. She was recognized by the Democrat Gazette in the "High Profile" section in 1987. In 1991, Evelyn moved to Washington, D.C. and began a new life of work and service. She volunteered with the Phillips Art Gallery, the Kennedy Center, the Clinton Administration, All Saints Episcopal Church in Chevy Chase, MD, and the Art Guild of Washington. She worked for 14 years as a fraud counselor with the National Consumers League. Evelyn loved the art world, and in particular the dance and theater. She was a cross word puzzle expert, an avid fan of mystery novels, and loved hosting small dinners. Most of all she loved and was beloved of her innumerable friends. The inscription on her high school yearbook was "If friends were bricks, she could build a skyscraper." This statement held true throughout her life, and she will be missed my many. Evelyn is survived by two sons, Travis McCoy of North Little Rock, John McCoy of Little Rock, daughter Meredith McCoy of Chevy Chase, MD, and two grandchildren, Evelyn and Garrett Slaughter. There will be a memorial service Tuesday, July 17th at 2:00 pm at First United Methodist Church officiated by Reverend Michael Mattox. Arrangements are under the direction of www.ruebelfuneralhome.com.

I am so sorry to read about Evelyn. I worked with her on many a committee in Arkansas Library Association and had many a lunch with her at the Arts Center.

I have always admired her dedication to family, friends and career. If I can "grow up" (I'm 57 by the way.) to be as neat a person as Evelyn I will consider myself lucky.

The world has lost a beautiful spirit the past week.
