Sally was born in Conneaut Lake, PA, on March 16, 1924, daughter of Ruby (Wood) Pollard and William Michael Pollard, and grew up in Mercer, PA. She graduated from Pennsylvania State University where she majored in home economics and chemistry and was the May Queen her senior year. Sally was an exceptional cook, always exploring how the ingredients in her recipes interacted to create the final result. After a career working in the test kitchens of Alcoa in Pittsburgh, PA, and with General Mills in Minneapolis, MN, she married Courtney P. Swindler in 1951 and relocated to Little Rock where they raised five children. Born into a family of educators, Sally was drawn to be active in the Women’s Emergency Committee to Open Our Schools, the Laubach Literacy Council, and Youth Home, as well as with the many outreach programs within her church, St. Paul United Methodist.
The family wishes to particularly thank her primary caregiver, Ethel Henry, for her loving devotion and gentle care which greatly enhanced Sally’s final years.
Cards may be sent to The Swindler Family, 42 Calais Court, Little Rock, AR 72223. In lieu of flowers, and if friends are so inclined, Sally suggested contributions to St. Paul United Methodist Church, Heifer International, and The Nature Conservancy. Arrangements are by Ruebel Funeral Home. A private ceremony is planned for the family and a future memorial service will be announced.
