Biography: James Lowell (Jim) Manning, Jr., 79, of Little Rock, passed away Tuesday, October 22.  Jim and his twin brother were born in Jonesboro on March 18, 1940 to Coach Lowell "Hoss" and Clyde Manning.  Jim was preceded in death by all three.

Jim grew up in Little Rock where, being a coach's son, he was a natural competitor and had a love of all sports. Jim's most fond memories were of his days playing baseball. In 1952, his Little Rock All-Star Little League team became the first Arkansas team to make it to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA. In 1957, he played for his friend and mentor, Buddy Coleman on the Coleman Dairy American Legion team. The team, after a hard battle, won the Arkansas state championship.

Jim attended Little Rock Central High School and U.A.L.R. (then L.R.U.) where he played basketball, and was also President of the social club Chi Sigma Epsilon, that obtained the charter to become the Theta Eta Chapter of Kappa Sigma Fraternity.  Jim had graduated before the first pledge class was initiated, but in 2018, Jim was proudly initiated with his grandson, Clay Caffey.

Jim served in the Air National Guard 123rd Reconnaissance Technical Squadron. After his father's death, he began working at Spaulding Sporting Goods.  Jim was an avid golfer and in 1964 opened the Arnold Palmer Driving Range on South University. It was during this time he met his wife Carolyn.

Jim and Carolyn opened the first Bonanza Steak House in Arkansas at Asher and University in 1966, where they worked together in the store until the birth of their daughter, Tracy, in 1968.  Over the next several years, Jim and his partners opened Bonanza Steak Houses in Arkansas, Kansas and Arizona.

Jim's dad, Hoss, took him to Oaklawn Park to his first horserace, when he was a young boy. He was immediately hooked and thoroughbred racing, by far, became his greatest passion. The Mannings had the thrill of owning several well-known horses including Dragset, Cisk and Silver Survivor.  He was also a part owner of a thoroughbred breeding and training farm in Okolona, AR. Spending time in Hot Springs of course introduced Jim to his favorite restaurant and in 1972, Jim and three friends purchased Coy's Steakhouse in Hot Springs from owner Coy Theobalt. The Mannings operated the restaurant until it burned in 2009.

Jim is survived by his wife of 53 years, Carolyn, daughter, Tracy Manning Brown (Eddie), brother-in-law, Rodney Appling and grandchildren Clay Caffey, Lauren Fredericksen, Reed Boroughs and Haley Raschke, one great grandchild, Taytum, and numerous cousins and great friends.

The family would like to thank Drs. B.K. Singh, Shane Kimball and Kamal Patel who patiently directed us through the last 4 years.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, October 29 at 11:00 a.m. at St. James United Methodist Church, 321 Pleasant Valley Drive, in Little Rock with a reception immediately following.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to The Lamar Porter Revitalization, c/o The Little Rock Boys Club, P.O. Box 530, North Little Rock, AR 72115 or to your favorite sports organization.

I knew Jim as a fraternity brother at UALR where we held court for several hours a day in the student union. Again as brothers in arms during our contribution to the war in the activation of our unit the 123rd Air National Guard. Brings back memories both joyful and sad. Peace to the family during these difficult times. Frank Blair

I first met Jim when I was a teenager. Although he was older than me we met through two common interests, baseball and golf. He impressed me as someone that set a good example of how to live, especially how to treat others. In fact he impressed me so much that he influenced my life in that regard. Many years later Debbie and I became friends with Jim and Carolyn. That was a real blessing!

Carolyn, we think highly of you too and always enjoyed visiting with you and Jim. Although we haven’t seen you lately, we’ve kept up with you and Jim through Tracy on Facebook. It was with great sorrow that we read of Jim’s passing. We pray that you, Tracy, and the rest of the family are comforted by the wonderful memories.

Jimmy, we love you and miss you more than words can say. You were a good man, good husband, good father and a good friend to so many. You definitely left your mark on this earth and while we are grieving your absence, we are grateful your suffering has ended and know you are having a glorious reunion with all of our loved ones who left us sooner. We will be reunited again one day but until then your will remain in our thoughts and hearts forever. We love you!

I looked up to my older cousin Jim Manning and looked forward to seeing him whenever my family made trips to Little Rock to visit. Jim was unfailingly kind to me and engaged me in whatever activities were going on in spite of our age difference. We played nerf basketball in the laundry room and went to the watermelon stand on the corner. I remember tennis, catch, and basketball. Jim was unfailingly generous with his time and attention and I loved him for that. I about memorized his record ‘Its in the Book’ because I thought it hilarious. I am quite sure that the ball gloves in my basement today came from Lowell and Jim. (I think I remember something about his rock and roll band in the the era of Elvis.)
Jim continued to value our family and showed his generosity in ways that I came to appreciate later in life. He encouraged and supported my brother’s education and my dad worked in some of his restaurant enterprises. At the time, I was certainly not able to offer them the concrete assistance that Jim freely gave and I am grateful for his assistance. Jim’s spirit is reflected in his family’s generosity towards others.

Jim & I met when I was in 4th grade@ Lee School-Jim was in the 5th grade. Kept in touch all through Jr. Hi & Hi School---then met again @ LRU. Jim invited me to join his intramural team(Hotdogs) and then Chi Sigma Epsilon-one of the things I really had wanted to do was be in attendance when Jim was joined formally into Kappa Sigma. Was not possible >having surgery on that day. Then our careers were similar-Restaurants(mine were in Mississippi). Jim never knew that he had been an inspiration to me-I was just a little kid that benefited from a friendship with Jim Manning. Also played a lot of Basketball. Over the yrs I kept up with Jim thru other Kappa Sigma Brothers, even though I lived, and still do, in Mississippi. A really good man! So Sorry for the family's loss. Haddox

I will miss my dear friend. We met 70 years ago when his dad sponsored the Little Hosses Little League team that we played on. We played on 4 teams together and won 2 state championships. He was fun to be around. I used to visit him on Fair Park Blvd and play ping pong in his garage. There was never a cross word spoken between us on or off the field. He will be missed by many. Praying God will give you peace and comfort in this trying time.

Prayers for the Family and may God's Love give comfort during these times. In 1967 I had the privilege to go to work for Bonanza and Jim. I had no idea the impact it would have on my future and work ethics Many times he would listen and times he would give advise. So many many times we all laughed and thoroughly enjoyed what we did. He was a great man in my opinion and a wonderful Family. Because of him a part of this world was better off. RIP
