Biography:

Shirley Webb Jakway, 86, died peacefully on October 11, 2019 in the care of Arkansas Hospice after a valiant battle against cancer. She was born August 23, 1933 to A.J. and Mildred Webb in Memphis, Tennessee. Shirley spent most of her adult life in New Orleans, where she met and married Robert Jakway, a long-time employee of the Times Picayune. Shirley worked in the office of the District Superintendent of the United Methodist Church in New Orleans and was active at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church where she served many terms as president of the UMW. In 2005 after Hurricane Katrina left their home under water, the Jakways moved to Little Rock where they joined Quapaw Quarter United Methodist Church, Shirley taught Sunday school there.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Robert and her sister, Nancy Guthrie of Fort Myers Beach, Florida. She is survived by her children, Allen Jakway (Thurid) of Germany, Julie Taylor (Butch) of Holland, Michigan; grandchildren, Asta and Kenneth Jakway, Andrew Taylor (Danielle) of Baton Rouge, LA; great-grandchildren, Amalie and Liam Taylor, brother, Roger Webb (Dale) of Little Rock.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Arkansas Hospice, clergy and lay members of Shirley’s church, and her many friends at Good Shepard for their loving care and support. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Quapaw Quarter Methodist Church. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2019 at 3PM Quapaw Quarter Methodist Church (1601 S. Louisiana

My husband Gerald and I were blessed to have embraced the Jakways as good friends in New Orleans. After hurricane Katrina, we continued a lively long distance correspondence between Memphis and Little Rock,
our new residences respectively.
Shirley and I shared a love for the Holy Scriptures and were so appreciative of all the beautiful gifts of nature
and especially shared a fondness for cats. It would be so nice to think that there was one waiting just for her
as she entered through the gates of heaven.

Respectfully,
The DeCorte’s

Shirley was one of the best souls I ever had the pleasure to know. I took four years of her Disciple Bible Study and learned more in those years about religion, faith and goodness than just about any other period of time in my life. I know Shirley is in heaven with Robert, teaching class and sternly, but lovingly, corralling the rowdy angels. Rest In Peace, Shirley. I am better for having known you.

Miss Shirley was a sweet and gentle spirit that we were phenomenally blessed to receive among us. She will be kept in the warm spots in the hearts of those of us who knew her and loved her dearly. She taught by living , as much as she taught from the Scriptures ---in that what she said was what she lived . Sorely missed .

Shirley and Robert were both just precious, and great additions to Quapaw Quarter UMC. My sincere condolences to Shirley’s family and friends.

I took the entire series of Disciple Bible Study classes under Shirley's leadership. She was terrific. She always listened patiently to some of us who would blurt out "I don't believe that!" and got the lesson back on track. We will miss her terribly. New Orleans' loss was certainly our gain.
