Biography: Alita Mantels (31 October 1950 - 23 September 2019) was born in St. Louis (Missouri) but spent much of her youth on the farms of her grandparents (Will Hall and Elizabeth Ilon Leslie Hall near Damascus, Arkansas; Ernest Mantels and Mary Virginia Beasley Mantels near St. Clair, Missouri).

She participated in a uniquely demanding K-12 honors program within the St. Louis public schools and graduated (1968) from Grover Cleveland High School as a National Merit Scholar.   Her father (Charles Ernst Mantels, Sr.) earned a Bronze Star for his World War II service in the Pacific with the U.S. Army and later worked in the U.S. Postal Service; his membership in the National Letter Carriers Association made his only daughter eligible for that organization’s sole national scholarship, which helped finance her education (1968-1972) at Hendrix College (Conway, Arkansas), from which she graduated with high honors.

With multiple majors and areas of certification, she taught in several Arkansas public high schools from 1972 until her retirement in 2010; the last thirty-five years of her teaching career were spent on the faculty of Little Rock’s Hall High School, where she taught various levels/courses of ACT Prep, English, French, Spanish, and Stage Crew.  (During those four decades she also served in many leadership roles related to textbook adoption, curriculum development, standardized testing, 504 accommodations/coordination, commencement exercises, co-curricular/extra curricular student activities, and the Parent Teacher Student Association.)

After graduating high school she spent all her summers working (in both the private and public sector) or traveling (solo or as a tour leader for groups of 3-6 high school students) in Europe, North America, and Latin America.  Throughout her adult life she supported public education, the arts, civil/human rights, and the environment.

Donations in her memory may be sent to the Arkansas Jazz Heritage Foundation/Arkansas Jazz Hall of Fame, P.O. Box 251187, Little Rock, AR 72225-1187.  Questions should be directed to her executer James Thomson (1992 incorporator and current president for the AJHF, 501.225.2891).

No funeral/burial services are planned, but friends, colleagues, and former students are encouraged to celebrate her life during an informal reception to be held 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Saturday, 26 October 2019 in the parlor of Ruebel Funeral Home (6313 West Markham Street, Little Rock, AR 72205, 501.666.0123).

I had Alita Mantels as a teacher at Hall High in 98' ( I also had Matt Hawkins listed below). I never had the chance to thank her for the impact she made on my life. Not that she would have wanted it, she was very much a pay it forward kind of person. I've carried a lot of our conversations about social justice through my life. Now as an old person I find myself having those same conversations with young people. Well Alita, let's see who writes on my page! Mr. Hawkins I hope life has been kind to you, you also left a larger impact than you could ever realize! I have a BA in English!

It has been 6 years since Alita's death, but I want to add this note. I started my teaching career at Hall High, and she took me under her wing. She helped me get on my feet, as I know she helped countless others. She was devoted and selfless. As long as I have my mind, I will never forget her.

My son, Matt, attended Hall from 1986 to 1989. He always spoke highly of Ms. Mantles when remembering his high school years. When we lost Matt in the summer of 2017, she took the time to write a condolence on the funeral home site, telling us how much she had enjoyed him in her class. We were so touched that she took the time to offer her thoughts about our son, who had been her student nearly 30 years ago. What a remarkable woman!

I just learned today of Ms. Mantels passing. I was struck with profound memories of her unique spirit as she taught me Spanish at Hall High School. I look back on her accomplishments laid out beautifully in her biography listed here and it makes me smile knowing she lived a purposeful life. As a student, I know I was a handful but recall her grace and compassion when dealing with me and my motley crew. Thank you, Ms. Mantels, for making a difference in my life as well as so many others. Rest peacefully, Señorita...

Ms. Mantels was my Spanish teacher at Hall High School. She was a passionate instructor. It didn’t matter if she was teaching grammar or sharing paella dishes, she gave 100%. We were always laughing in her class. Rest In Peace.

Condolences to Alita's family and friends. I enjoyed working with her during my years at Hall High. She was a very dedicated teacher who gave her students the best of learning every day. And yes, as some have said she was always going above and beyond for her students. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

I remember Ms Mantels as I walked the halls at Hall High back in my sophomore-senior years; although I wasn’t her student; my 3 older brothers were and spoke very highly of her. May you rest in eternal peace with God. Prayers for your family and friends and loved ones.

I loved her as a teacher. She was firm and her nose was always to the grindstone. She will be in my heart and mind forever until it's my turn.

Words fail me as they never would fail Alita...she was 15 younger than I, a remarkable, articulate, brilliant advocate for kids and anyone needing a ‘pit bull’ to fight a cause. We shared a love of professional ethics , she was fearless in expressing her opinion on just about everything. Alita was fearless and passionate, loved and beloved. Soar with the eagles, friend...the ancestors await you!

Senior Year, spring 1992
Dosed off during one of her TV presentations to the class.
I received a Behavior Document (I’m sure I saved in my senior book)
- “William has a chronic apathetic attitude towards learning based on his body language.”
She was an odd one, but surly one that taught me so much!
RIP Ms. Mantels/Friend.

Nobody knows where you are
How near or how far
Shine on you crazy diamond
Pile on many more layers
And I'll be joining you there
Shine on you crazy diamond
And we'll bask in the shadow
Of yesterday's triumph
And sail…

Love you, Alita. Thanks for the laughs and the good times.
