Biography: Charles Murrelle “Sport” Watkins, a great American, age 84, of Little Rock died Thursday, May 31, 2007. He was born in Little Rock to the late Guy A. Watkins, Sr. and Maude Boyle Watkins. After graduating from Little Rock High School (Little Rock Central High School) in 1940, he attended the University of Arkansas for two years before enrolling in the armed services. During WWII he served in the United States Air Corps with the 341st Squadron as a fighter pilot, stationed in Guam, Japan, Korea and the Philippines and was honorably discharged in 1946. When the war was over he returned to Arkansas and completed his studies at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. Sport worked his way through college by waiting tables, delivering for a laundry service and working at Price Patton Department Stores. Upon graduation he went to work for Arkansas Printing and Lithographing, followed by Union Life Insurance Company, before beginning his longtime employment (32 years) with Stephens, Inc. He was a vice-president of the company at the time of his retirement in 1987. Friends and family will remember Sport as a dapper gentleman who moved among the “movers and shakers”. He started out with few assets and any material success he earned himself by doing things the right way. He was generous with his family as well as others. He enjoyed golf, fishing, hunting, a good drink and a good joke. He loved his family, country, and fellow man. Sport is survived by his wife of 15 years, Jane Stewart Watkins, son Greg Watkins, grandchildren Sarah and Gregory, brother Frank Watkins and his wife Pat, sister Maude Watkins Simmons and her husband Jim, all of Little Rock. He is also survived by step-children: Donald Morton, Jr. and his wife Kelli, Stewart Morton and his wife Sunny, residents of Des Arc, and Jane Ann Moore of Searcy, and 8 step-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by brother, Guy Watkins, Jr. and sisters, Virginia Watkins Turner and Carolyn Watkins. A rosary for Sport will be said at 7 o’clock Sunday night, June 3, at Ruebel Funeral Home with Deacon Larry Jegley officiating. On Monday, June 4, at 12 noon, there will be a memorial service at Second Presbyterian Church, followed by a reception in the Great Hall.
