Biography: Susan Harrell Mayes, age 77, passed away on Friday, September 14, 2018 in her home in Little Rock. Born February 20, 1941 in Jacksonville, Florida, she was the only child of the late William Robert Harrell and Flo Coxwell Harrell. She is pre-deceased by her husband, Samuel Hubert Mayes, Jr. and her grandson, Wilson Harrell Foltz. She was a strong, independent and opinionated woman with a great sense of humor. She loved politics, the Razorbacks, her friends and her children?s friends. However, she loved nothing more than her family. She was a loyal, devoted and proud mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She will be greatly missed by her family who loved her dearly. She grew up in Jacksonville, Florida and attended Pine Manor Junior College in Wellesley, Massachusetts and Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. She was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. In 1960, Susan was invited to make her debut, and was presented by her father at the Florida Yacht Club and Timuquana County Club in Jacksonville. She moved to Fort Smith, Arkansas in 1963 and became active in the Junior League of Fort Smith; serving on the board, chaired the Children?s Theater and served as editor of ?The Parapet.? Susan also raised funds for Sparks Regional Medical Center and was Director of Volunteers for the hospital. While there she instituted the senior outreach program ?Telecare.? Susan moved to Little Rock in 1972 and continued her work with the Junior League of Little Rock. She was asked by KARK to coordinate its Community Service Awards, which she did for the next 10 years along with the Arkansas Office of Volunteerism and the Governor?s office. In 1988, she was tapped by Betty Bumpers to coordinate efforts with Peace Links to form the Soviet-American Women?s Exchange, which promoted personal interaction between professional women from both countries. In 1989, she traveled to Moscow as a delegate for the ?Women, Peace and Ecology? conference. She worked with Bumpers again to raise funds and help commission an artist to paint a portrait of Senator Hattie Caraway of Arkansas to hang in the U.S. Capital in Washington, DC. Her interest in politics dates back to volunteering for Senator J. William Fulbright in Fort Smith. She was one of the first volunteers on the 1992 Clinton Presidential primary campaign and was hired by the Democratic National Committee as one of the Southern Finance Directors during the general election. In 1995, Susan and Julie Haught formed the event planning company, ?Art of the Party,? which they thought might last a few years. It was still in business at the end of 2017 and had managed, or helped manage, such events as the CEO Summit, Tabriz and dozens of weddings. Susan is survived by her daughter, Eleanor Foltz Day (Dale) and granddaughter, Katherine Susan Day of Corpus Christi, Texas. Her son, Thomas Price Foltz, III and grandson, Davis Albers Foltz of Little Rock. Three stepdaughters, Jean Mayes Robinson (Rob) of Oakton, Virginia, Charlotte Mayes Kline (Charles) of Chestnut Hill, Massachussets; and Melissa Anne Mayes of Saugherties, New York. Grandchildren Laura Robinson Cummings (Chris), Michael Mayes Robinson (Shellie), Samuel Trevor Robinson, John Macintosh Kline, Sommers Shallhorn Kline and India Liles Kline. Great grandchildren Carter Mayes Cummings, Jane Elizabeth Cummings, Lena Pline Robinson and Noah Singh Robinson. A sister-in-law, Patricia Mayes Janes of Fort Smith and first cousin, Mary Ann Moore of Jonesboro, Georgia. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral on Thursday, September 20, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in the name of Wilson Harrell Foltz in care of UAMS Psychiatric Research Institute, 4301 West Markham Street, Little Rock, 72205; or Trinity Cathedral, 310 West 17th Street, Little Rock 72206. Arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home, www.ruebelfuneralhome.com
