Biography: Richard Pendergrass, 68, died Friday, April 13, 2018, at his home in North Little Rock, Arkansas. He was born January 31, 1950, to Curtis and Mary Pendergrass, and raised in Crossett, Arkansas. Rick was a scholastic warrior, an avid/consuming reader and unbeatable at Jeopardy. He left a life of journalism behind after attending the University of Kansas (Jayhawks) to chase the budding computer industry. In no particular order his favorite things in life were the California Redwoods, baseball, rugby, travel and a good whiskey. He was well traveled and made friends wherever he found himself. He raised his boys to be strong, smart and respectful. The last decade of his life was riddled with health complications. The pain is now finished. Rest in peace. He leaves behind his two sons, Joshua (Grand Junction, CO), and Gordon (Megan) (Reno, NV), four granddaughters, Finley, Erynn, Bronwyn, Dempsey, his sisters Beti Gunter (Mike Smith) (North Little Rock), Sharleen Bakeman (Mark) (Olympia, WA), and Susan Pendergrass (Crossett) and his former wife of 30 years June (Mountain View, CA).

I met Rick in the early ?80s and we became fast friends. His gregarious style and generous nature made him easily approachable ? people liked and trusted him quickly. His extensive knowledge of satellite imaging and photo reconnaissance established professional credibility worldwide for him and I was very lucky to have him pass some of that knowledge on to me. As a student of the world, Rick was at home with South American, Far Eastern and European cultures and languages and we shared a common appreciation for Japan. I ate more sushi and drank more Irish single malt whisky with Rick than any sane man should. He loved living life grandly and shared that enthusiasm with everyone that knew him. He delighted in torturing us by playing the bagpipes and spoiled us with his home made barbecue sauce. Rick was the best man at my wedding and shared a birthday with my wife (my birthday was the very next day) which resulted in many 3-day celebrations ? often dressed in our tuxedos and finery in San Francisco which we jokingly called the ?Penguin Parade?. Rick was the kind of friend you could call at odd hours with strange requests and he would drop anything to come help out. His sense of wonder, critical thought, and enjoyment for living changed my life forever and certainly for the better. Here?s to you, Hige-San. I hope you find your Valhalla.

Sending my deepest condolences. I will never forget Rick and all he taught me throughout the years. From the endless hours on the baseball field spent developing me and many others into great players pushing us to reach our full potential to accepting me into his home and family and always looked out for and treated me as a son growing up with Gordon. Rick you will forever be missed, but your personality and character can never be forgotten. I'm so very sad to hear you have left us, but I am glad you are now resting peacefully.

My sincerest condolences to Josh, Gordon and the rest of the family. I never knew my cousin that well but have some very clear memories of him, especially as a Rugby player and an intellectual who enjoyed our family conversations at Christmas, which, as a young child, I found to be very robust and energetic.

I'm sad Rick is gone but happy he is in a place devoid of pain and suffering now.

Certainly Joshua is carrying out the rugby tradition. As Joshua is a very fine man so must have been his father.
