Biography: Jane Gordon Varner, 52, of Little Rock passed away Wednesday, April 11, 2007. A journalist, English teacher, owner of her own typesetting business, wife, and stepmother, Jane had returned to her native Little Rock in 2002 after the passing of her husband, Ned Varner, in Montgomery, Alabama. She battled cancer for seven years, often reaching out to others with similar situations. Jane loved teaching and was a fan of southern writers. She was a fan of great literature and especially interested in the work of William Faulkner. She shared her grandmother's (Ruby Collier Thomas) love of cooking and compiled a recipe book of Thomas’ distinctive cuisine. On the day Jane died, she sent an email to her mother suggesting they cook together that night and mentioning the recipes she wanted to try. Jane was also an active member of International Association of Laryngectomies and arranged for their next convention in 2008 to be held in Little Rock. Jane is survived by her parents and step-parents, Jean Gordon and Walter Clancy and Frank and Jean Gordon; her step-sons, Will and Mathew Varner; and siblings Anne Gordon Perry and Tom Gordon; her step-siblings Tedra Duck, Derek Lind, and Jarrod Lind. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 14, at 11:00 a.m. at the Unitarian Church, 1818 Reservoir Rd, Little Rock. Contributions in Jane’s honor may be sent to the UAMS Cancer Research Center, 4301 W. Markham, slot 63, or to the Unitarian Universalist Church, or to the Troy State Ned Varner Scholarship Fund, 260 Adams Administration Bldg., Troy, AL 36082.

I just found a letter Jane wrote to my mother about a Gordon Family History she was going to publish. I am so sorry that I was to late to speak with her about our shared history. Did she ever publish the book? I would love to obtain a copy of it if anyone knows the publisher. My condolences to her family and friends and her continuing legacy.

I was shocked to hear of Jane's passing. We were out of town and didn't get the news until late Sunday. I remember her well as a kind, energetic, creative, cousin. What a loss at such a young age. Our prayers are with you! Love,

I just heard about Jane's passing today. I am so sorry. I remember having such great times with her in junior high and high school. As a cancer survivor myself, I just wish I could have been with her some since she moved back to L.R.

I am truly sorry.

I am too sad!
I knew a few years ago that Jane was thinking of moving back to Little Rock, because she wrote me a letter, which I lost in the mess of my house. So I didn't know that she actually came back. And she has been here all this time?! Little Jane.
I have missed her for a long time, since we stopped being girls together at the Arkansas Democrat. I think of those days every time I make the appetizer I like best out of Tacky's Table, and when I use the Cuisinart she and Helen Mistic got for me when Michael and I married, and every time I chance across one blue shoe, alone, by the side of the road. That happens more often than you might suppose.
Those days are gone, and now Jane is gone, and I won't get to see her ever or to know the grown woman she became.
It is too sad.
