Biography: Alice Lee Farney Ryan, 63, of Hot Springs Village died Tuesday, April 10, 2007. She is preceded in death by her father Leo F. Farney. She is survived by her mother Alice (Corbin) Farney; husband of 39 years MG (Ret) James A. Ryan; sons John Patrick Ryan (Lindsey) of Little Rock, James A. Ryan (Barbara Kay) of Little Rock; daughters Barbara Hesse (Robert) of Arkadelphia, Patti Wingfield (Greg) of Camden; sisters Mary Ellen Farney of Hot Springs Village, Kathleen Farney of Little Rock; brothers Micheal Farney of Aurora, IL and John Farney (Kim) of Willow Springs, IL. Alice, a polio survivor (1948) was involved in competitive swimming from the age of five. She received numerous awards and citations. Her medley relay team broke an Olympic record. Following her years of competitive swimming, Alice was a lifeguard and swimming coach at LaGrange Field Club (LaGrange, IL). Alice received her BS degree from Nazareth College in Kalamazoo, Michigan, her Masters degree in Physical Therapy from the Army Baylor School of Physical Therapy and a Masters in Hospital Administration from Webster University. She served during the Viet Nam conflict as an officer in the Army Medical Specialist Corps as a physical therapist at Fort Sam Houston, Texas and Fort Campbell, Kentucky. During her tour of duty, she met and married James (Jack) Ryan, her husband of 39 years. Alice held various positions for 33 years at St. Vincent Health System in Little Rock in Rehabilitation, Orthopedics and Neurology Administration. She held positions in State government as the Executive Director, State Board of Physical Therapy, also serving on the State Board of Athletic Trainers and as a Legislative Bill Analyst. Alice received many professional awards and was chosen as the recipient of the Patrick Henry Citation Award for her work in establishing the model family support program for the National Guard during Dessert Storm. She was active in many community and state organizations, including: Chairperson of the Board of Directors for the Union Rescue Mission and the Dorcus House in Little Rock, Past President of the Pilot Club of Little Rock, Treasurer for the United States-Taiwan Sister Relations Alliance and 6-term President of the Arkansas Chapter of the American State Physical Therapy Association. Alice and Jack are the proud grandparents of eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild and one very lively Yorkie. They were residents of Little Rock for 39 years. Last year they retired to Hot Springs Village, AR where Alice was active in her church, the Village Bible Church, as well as several other social groups. She was very happy in her new home with her wonderful new friends from the Village. She will be missed by all (including her Yorkie, Oliver!). Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 13 at 11:00 am at Holy Souls Church in Little Rock, burial will follow at 1:00 pm at Arkansas State Military Cemetery in North Little Rock.
