Biography: Mary Catherine (Cathy) Springstead, age 71, of Little Rock, formerly of New Orleans, died on November 27, 2016 after a valiant battle with heart disease, diabetes and pulmonary edema. She was born on June 23, 1945 in Little Rock, AR to Christine Hambuchen Springstead and William Frederick Springstead. She is predeceased by her parents. Survivors include her brother Fred Springstead, nephew Kevin Vogeltanz and grandniece Christine Vogeltanz. Cathy loved life. She had a quick wit and zany spirit comparable to none. Some of her fondest memories were of her high school years at Mount Saint Mary Academy and after her move back to Little Rock she was supported by long ago friends form her Mount years. After graduating, Cathy made her way to Loyola University in New Orleans where she began her illustrious career in the dental hygiene profession. New Orleans became her home and she fulfilled her dream of becoming a teacher after earning a Master?s in Education. She taught young women and men to become talented hard working hygienist both at Loyola and the Louisiana School of Dentistry in New Orleans. In addition, Cathy continued working in her chosen profession as a clinical dental hygienist and became extremely involved with the dental hygiene associations. She served one year as the President of the New Orleans Dental Hygienist Association, was a Trustee for the American Dental Hygienist?s Association and represented Louisiana, Arkansas, Alabama and Mississippi for two years in the association. She truly made a mark in dental hygiene not only in Louisiana but nationally as well. A former associate, Nancy Cline, who was also her friend and employer, said ?Cathy was an incredible teacher, an excellent clinician, skilled at taking care of people and her students loved her.? After Hurricane Katrina, life changed for Cathy. She moved across the lake from New Orleans but continued working as a hygienist for her lifelong friend, Dr. Peter Tufton. She spent every Christmas and Thanksgiving with his family and was so very grateful for that time with him, Linda and their children. Some of her greatest joys in life were her mission trips to Honduras, singing in the choir at the Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in New Orleans and running. Her family and friends thank Hospice Home Care for the kind, loving care given to Cathy over the last six and a half months. She could not have been in a better place. We are extremely grateful. Visitation will be held at Our Lady of the Holy Souls Church, 1003 North Tyler Street, on Thursday, December 1, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. and a Rosary will follow at 6:30 with Deacon John Hall presiding. The funeral Mass of Christian Burial will also be at Our Lady of the Holy Souls on Friday morning at 11:00 with Fr. John Marconi presiding. The family asks that memorials be made in Cathy?s honor to Mount Saint Mary Academy, 3224 Kavanaugh, Little Rock, AR 72205. Arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home, www.ruebelfuneralhome.com

Many great memories spending time at the Springstead home with Fred and his family. Cathy was the "older" sister and of course our job was to be as obnoxious as possible, which we did quite well. Upon moving to New Orleans I was happy to learn Cathy was here and was friends with one of my dear friends, it truly is a small world. My condolences to Fred, know that your family is in my thoughts and prayers.

Cathy was my first friend in second grade at Mt. St. Mary's and we remained friends throughout grade and high school. She was a gift to have as a friend and I cherish the times I was able to see her when she moved back to Little Rock and I was in town visiting. Cathy, Sherry Wortsmith and I were so close and those days being with her will forever remain in my heart. My thoughts to Fred and family and all her friends. Heaven is brighter!
Peace and God bless, Patty

LSUSD Dental Hygiene Class of 1995- She was tough, abrupt, and loud but she was smart. She is remembered, respected and admired because of it. My deepest condolences to her family.

LSUSD Dental Hygiene Class of 1995- I shared this with my classmates, but I thought I would share this here too. I wasn't her favorite, but she was mine.
Famous phrase ..."get to the point!" She was tough and hard to please, but she was the best of the best and made us expect that from ourselves. Best compliment ever was her telling me "good job" at graduation right before we walked out in our robes. (I'd made a 93 on my National Board exam.) That meant more to me than my diploma! She was the kind of woman that when her feet hit the floor in the morning, the Devil said,"oh crap, she's up!" I admired and respected her tremendously.

Hearing of Cathy's death has made me incredibly sad. While I have not been in contact with her lately at one time we were the closest of friends.
I will never forget her warm personality, her quick mind, and her incredible wit. I can still see her sitting in my kitchen on General Tayor in New Orleans telling me a humorous story. I will always treasure the memories I have of our many shared happy experiences together. My sysmpathies go her family especially to her brother Fred.
