Biography: Arthur O. Sanders, retired Lt. Cdr. U.S. Navy, died March 3, 2007. He was born March 6, 1908, to Irene P. and Theo M. Sanders. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister, Miriam S. Dickinson, and his loving and devoted wife of 56 years, Bernice F. Sanders. He is survived by daughter, Sue Maddison and her husband, Keith, and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. Sanders attended school in Little Rock, graduating from Little Rock High School. He attended the University of Illinois and Massachusetts Institute of Technology and received degree in law from UALR. He was employed by the U.S. Civil Service in New York and New Jersey. Arthur joined the Navy upon the beginning of World War II and was assigned as Communication Officer on the ship of the Admiral in Charge of the Mediterranean. He participated in the Sicilian and Italian Invasions. After an injury in North Africa, he returned to the U.S. and was assigned to Communications Officer in McAllister, Oklahoma, and then retired as Lt. Commander. He then worked for the Veteran’s Administration in Little Rock for 33 years as a Loan Guaranty Attorney. During his retirement, Arthur volunteered with Meals on Wheels, Radio Reading Service for the Blind, St. Vincent’s Infirmary, and Volunteers in Public Schools. He also worked with the Visitor’s Information Services and was the first male docent at the Arkansas Arts Center. In his leisure time, Arthur enjoyed golf, trout fishing, working crosswords, and was an avid reader. Arthur received many honors for his involvement with his community including a letter of commendation from Governor Bill Clinton for his work with VIP’s, an award from Governor Frank White in recognition for his volunteer services, a Community Service Award for his volunteer work and an Ageless Hero Award. A member of Congregation B’Nai Israel for 90 years, he served on the Board of Director’s there. Services will be held at 2:00 on Tuesday, March 6, at Temple B’nai Israel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sharing and Caring Committee of Temple B’nai Israel, 3700 Rodney Parham, Little Rock, AR 72212, or to a charity of your choice.
