Biography: When the music was turned up, Susan Zook loved to dance. And sing. And laugh. Preferably all at the same time. Her loved ones know that the band is now getting warmed up to play for Susan. Susan Scarbrough Zook passed away peacefully on Friday, June 3, 2016, at St. Vincent?s Infirmary after a short illness. She was 71. Susan was born August 19, 1944, in Pine Bluff, the daughter of Charles and Doris Scarbrough. She graduated from Pine Bluff High School, where she fondly recalled performing comedy skits for school variety shows. She attended the University of Arkansas campuses in Fayetteville and Little Rock. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority and a rabid Razorback fan. Susan was beloved by family and friends for her charm and wit. She was a devoted mother of her three children and a popular parent among many of her children?s friends who enjoyed her exuberance and her sometimes zany sense of humor. She believed in doing things the proper way, and she was not reluctant to give a friend or loved one a heads-up when they weren?t quite put together. She instilled in her children a sense of confidence and freedom that they treasure. Susan worked for the State of Arkansas for 34 years, primarily in the Unclaimed Property division of the Office of the Auditor of State. As a proud yellow dog Democrat, Susan was tickled to be part of an exclusive club of state government employees who shared birthday celebrations at the State Capitol with then-Gov. Clinton. In addition, Susan served in major volunteer capacities for the Junior League of Little Rock. Susan and her co-chair for the Little Rock Cooks cookbook grew sales so much that they were replaced by a team of more than a dozen. In addition, she served as editor of the Junior League?s Newssheet magazine. Susan was an avid quilter, art collector, cook, reader of fiction (especially crime novels), gardener, and photographer who was never afraid to pursue new endeavors when she saw beauty and value in them. Susan was also a 16-year breast cancer survivor and participated in support groups to help other survivors. She was a lifelong Methodist. Susan is survived by three children and their spouses, James Randolph Zook, Jr., and Frances Flautt Zook, of Atlanta, GA, Charles Scarbrough Zook and Kelly Dawn Simon of Little Rock, and Catherine Zook Baker and Michael Deen Baker of Fayetteville; one brother, Charles Wade Scarbrough, Jr., of Little Rock; and five grandchildren, John Riley Baker, Thomas Deen Baker and Elizabeth Anne Baker, all of Fayetteville, and James Randolph Zook, III and Henry McWillie Zook, both of Atlanta. Susan is preceded in death by her parents. Susan?s entire family is very grateful for the love and support from so many family and friends in recent weeks. In particular, Susan?s children wish to thank the medical and nursing staff in the Medical ICU at St. Vincent?s Infirmary for their compassionate and tireless care. Memorials can be sent to either the Arkansas chapter of the Susan G. Komen Foundation, 904 Autumn Road, Suite 500, Little Rock, 72211, or the Arkansas Arts Center, 501 E. 9th St., Little Rock, 72202. The family will host a visitation Wednesday, June 8 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Ruebel Funeral Home, 6313 W. Markham in Little Rock. A memorial service is scheduled for Thursday, June 9 at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, with a reception to follow. The family will hold a private interment service.

To Jim, Catherine and Charles and families and Randy too, Susan and I were great friends at the University and Pi Phi house. We laughed and had a great time there and for many years following until we both were immersed in work and our lives and lost touch. I admired and cared for her so much it grieves me that she passed away. She was a wonderful woman, friend, mother and excelled in whatever she put her mind to. You all have my deep sympathy and love. May you be blessed with all the fond memories of Susan.

I lived with the George & Mary Alice, Hank, Walter, Harvey and Mary Lee Weaver family along with my brother Glenn Bucy across the street from the Scarbrough home. What fun we all had growing up together. If Susan's children were/are anything like Susan growing up they must have been a hand full BUT respectful of their parents and grandparents. I still remember that beautiful magnolia tree in their yard. You all have been blessed by her life. Glad I was part of it early on!

What a delightful person! Susan was the epitome of courage during her battle with breast cancer. She had such a positive attitude during it all. Her zany personality kept everyone in the State Auditor's Office in stitches. This colorful person will be missed by so many. Godspeed Susan!

I first knew Susan in Brownies at Gabe Meyer. I remember this because she had a Brownie doll I coveted! And there, like in every phase of her life to come, she was loved by all who were privileged to know her. What a talent she had to bring levity to any situation. I wish I could be there this week to listen to all the reminiscing of her Pine Bluff friends. Great story Bob Glasscock! My condolences to her family as life without Susan is redefined.

Jim and family, my heart breaks for your loss. However, I can't help but smile in the small piece of your mom I was able to read about above - it's clear her creativity and light shined through her children. Sending many prayers your way.

Oh, Susan we will miss you! Your laugh, your making us all laugh, too, your thoughtfulness and kindness in every situation of life, one of my favorite '62 classmates.

There are lots of memories of our lifelong friendship filling my head and heart: Brownies, bunking parties, high school crazies -- many that we have gone back to laugh about years later. You'll always be in a special corner of my heart.

Love and prayers to all of you in her family.

I was Susan's boyfriend in the kindergarten class of 1950 in Pine Bluff. Or at least one of her boyfriends. She was always very popular because she was a good person and fun to be around.

Our thoughts are with her family.

Susan was fun personified. We sat next to each other in Glee Club, and she would make me laugh out loud, which caused me to get in trouble with Richard Smith. I will always remember her comedic antics and ready smile. Watch out, Heavenly Hosts! A force of nature is in your midst.

I did not have the pleasure of knowing Susan, but I know her son and daughter-in-law and know through them that she must have been quite a lady. My prayers are with the family as they celebrate her life.

My prayers and thoughts are with all the family. I grew up with Susan and her brother Charles in Pine Bluff. My sister Becky and I, as well as the many others Susan touched, are terribly saddened with her loss.

"Our love will span the oceans, Katsumi!"

Susan and I brought down the house with that sketch. (And shows like Thurber's "The Male Animal.") Rehearsing it at Susan's house one early evening, Doris came home and walked in on us kissing. Supine on the living room couch. Rehearsing. Doris bought it, anyway.

I loved her ever since. (And moved to Los Angeles to go into show business - because I caught The Bug from all the laughter and applause we generated together.)

Through all the years and all the visits to Little Rock over 30 years, then finally moving back; getting to know her wonderful children - Jim, Charles and Catherine; Susan remained the life of every party and a loyal and trusted friend.

It took no effort at all to hear the applause Up There as she made her entrance.

They're lucky to have her. And we - especially the Class of '62 - were lucky to know her for 65 glorious years.

Keep 'em smiling, Katsumi. And put in a good word for me.

I met Susan when Charles was moving into the trailers at Dunbar Middle School.. I was a little worried about getting his room set up, however, the first day I realized how lucky Charles was to have such a wonderful mother! She stayed up there all day and all night and quickly made his room a learning center! We became fast friends. It seems so long ago now. Susan was always there when anyone needed her and was by the side of her family in constant love & support.
Susan taught me a lot through my friendship with Charles ... about being a good person and friend. She was smart, motivated, thoughtful and caring. She touched & helped so many throughout her life out of pure goodness, strength and love... She was a true blessing. Her life gave all us memories too beautiful to forget.
