Dr. Spieker was one of my favorite graduate school professors. She was brilliant, kind and passionate about teaching and sharing her knowledge. I will remember her as an excellent teacher and role model. Thank you, Dr. Spieker, for taking an interest in me. I hope I have lived up to your expectations!

Gisela was my first cousin once removed. My mother and her were first cousins but she was much closer to me in age and interests. Although we only spent one day together, we both forged a friendship based on our interest in Latin America, the commonality of our family German background, and that we both were academics. So, we engaged in bi-monthly phone conversations keeping up as we aged and underwent some medical problems. It was always wonderful to talk to her and I will miss our conversations.

Gisela always struck me as someone whose feet were firmly planted in the ground. Her intellect shone through in every conversation we had. I think she loved both learning and teaching and, of course, her cats. She left the world a better place for her presence. Rest in peace, dear Gisela.

Even though I can count on one hand the number of times I was in the same room with Gisela she will be greatly missed by my wife and I. For me, she was a last link back to my German heritage and my mother's home region of Ostfriesland. To my wife, she was a friendly voice who always remembered to call at holiday time.

We were hoping she would follow the lead of her Aunt and Grandmother, both of whom lived to be centenarians. But she lived a long life and accomplished more good things than we ever knew.

Rest in peace Gisela.
