Biography: Dr. James Lowden Dennis, age 92, of North Little Rock, returned home with “Our Heavenly Father” on January 10, 2006. He is preceded in death by his late wife Virginia Roueche’ Dennis, two brothers, Westervelt Dennis and John Shelby Metcalf, a sister Elisabeth Hughes and grandson James Corey Dennis. He is survived by his two sons, William H. Dennis (Becky) and Jim R. Dennis (Joanna), of North Little Rock, and daughter Constance M. Wilson of Fayetteville, six grandchildren, Kelly Beres, Kimberly Spafford, Kara Smith, Kristen Harris, Billy Dennis and Andrea Dennis and eight great-grandchildren. He was a beloved Father, Grandfather, friend, mentor and last of the great and true gentlemen. Born in Britton, Oklahoma on August 8, 1913 to William and Artie Dennis, he graduated from CSTC in Edmond Oklahoma and earned his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Oklahoma in 1940. He enjoyed the electric organ which he learned to play as therapy to strengthen a hand injury received while serving in World War II as a Lieutenant, Senior grade in the South Pacific. Dr. Dennis specialized in pediatrics with a primary interest in developmental pediatrics. He served as Dean of Medicine, Director and Vice President of the University’s Health Sciences Center at the Univesity of Oklahoma. He would be the first Chancellor for the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, retiring from the position in 1979 but continuing as a professor of pediatrics untill fully retiring in 1981 as Emeritus Professor of Pediatrics. He would then enjoy his title as consultant to the James L. Dennis Child Developmental Center at Children's Hospital. Dr. Dennis had a passion for children and their development. He was honored as a man of vision and one who loved a challenge. On one hand he was always working to solve immediate problems all the while planning, envisioning and working for a better tomorrow in Medicine and Humanity. His love for children was evident not only through his practice as a pediatrician, but also at home with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank the many friends and physicians who helped care for Dr. Dennis and a special thanks to Hospice and to his faithful and loving caregivers, Billy Dennis, Lia Polite, Cathy Johnson, Helen Jones, Sherry Aburu and Ollie Taylor who put in countless hours around the clock to make sure he was well taken care of. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00pm Friday, January 20, 2006 at St. James United Methodist Church in Little Rock, Arkansas. Interment will be in Palestine, Texas.
