Biography: Earl Sigfrid Magnuson, 87, of Little Rock, died Monday, December 7, 2015. He was born and raised in Des Moines, IA. After graduating from Lincoln High School in Des Moines, he served in the U.S. Army, then attended Northwestern and Drake Universities. He became an actuary, and was employed over his lifetime by insurance companies in Omaha, NE, Des Moines, IA, Chattanooga, TN, and in Little Rock, AR. In 1951, he married Myrlee E. Zierke from Fort Dodge, IA. Earl and Myrlee lived most of their lives in Des Moines, IA and Omaha, NE and raised two sons, Mark A. Magnuson of Nashville, TN and David E. Magnuson of Foster City CA. After the death of Myrlee in 2008, he continued to live independently in Little Rock, AR until his death thanks to an extensive support network of friends in his neighborhood and at St. Mark's Episcopal Church. He loved golfing, fishing, and especially woodworking. He was an expert cabinet maker, was a member of the Arkansas Art Guild, and taught others some of his woodworking skills at the Arkansas Art Center for many years after his retirement. Earl is survived by his two sons, Mark and his wife Lucile and daughter Kelsey, and David and his wife Martha, son Erik and daughter Audrey. Memorial service will be at 1 p.m. on Monday, December 14, 2015 at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 1000 N. Mississippi, Little Rock, AR 72207. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Mark's Church or the Arkansas Art Center.

Got to know Earl as we were serving on the Friends of Contemporary Craft Committee at the Arkansas Arts Center together.
Had always admired his woodworking skills and purchased several pieces to give as gifts but then had a chance to find out what a kind and generous person he was when working with him. I know he will be missed by the woodworking community, friends and family.
I am sorry I did not see his obituary in time to attend his funeral.

Earl was the dearest, kindest and most fun neighbor we have every met. He was like family living next door, during our time in Arkansas. I am so grateful to have met and become friends with him. My best and warmest thoughts are with the family during this difficult time.

I got to know Earl through his service to the St. Charles POA Board. He was knowledgeable and precise and had a love for our neighborhood. He brought passion to the discussion of many issues. We enjoyed Earl's hospitality in hosting several of our Board Christmas parties. He was a fine gentleman and he will be missed.

May God's grace and peace be with his family.

I'll be forever grateful to Earl for his help with the Jim Elder Good Sport Fund. Over six years he made hundreds of wooden "home plates" for the Home Plate Art Auction. He came up with the design on his own, and enjoyed seeing the creative plates that were used to raise money for scholarships and great local charities. He was a pleasure to work with, and was the reason we were able to have successful auctions. My condolences to his family, about whom I heard glowing updates every year.

I believe I have 11 pieces Mr. Earl made including two cedar chests, three jewelry boxes, two step stools, a pine chest, my daughter?s ?hope chest?, and even two rowing oar handles. We have given his boxes as gifts from California to England. I am so lucky to have known Earl, and Myrlee. The high quality of his work is reflective of the man he was. He will be remembered fondly for many generations to come as he lives on through his creations.
