Biography: Dr. Carol A. Mittelstaedt (69), a.k.a. ?Dr. Mitt? by her colleagues and students, passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 12, 2015. She was born in Florida in February 1946, but grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas where her father was the Founding Dean of the College of Pharmacy at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). She attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, and continued on to Medical School and graduated from UAMS. Carol was a devoted physician, and a pioneer in the early ultrasound field of radiology having completed a specialized Ultrasound Fellowship at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. Carol was one of the first women to join the Department of Radiology at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine at Chapel Hill in 1976, and was a very active Imaging Division leader, physician, professor, and mentor before retiring 38 years later in 2014. ?Dr. Mitt? was often an invited lecturer at many national and local radiology conventions as well as foreign medical convocations in Chile, Egypt, Hong Kong, and Thailand. She was a Fellow of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, and served on their Board of Governors. She also enjoyed active membership participation in The American College of Radiology, American Roentgen Ray Society, North Carolina Ultrasound Society, Radiological Society of North America, and Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound. She researched and authored two globally-acclaimed medical textbooks: Abdominal Ultrasound, and General Ultrasound; as well as numerous related articles. Carol was very accomplished professionally, but she also was a wonderful big sister who was always looking after her family members, leaving a positive impact in their lives. Her hobbies included photography, swimming, sailing, scuba, other water sports, underwater photography, nature & wildlife, and flower arranging. She dearly adored her English springer spaniel, Beau and loved taking him for walks. She was known as ?Glo? to many girl scouts where she served as counselor during several college summers at Camp Ouachita. Her nickname, Glo came from her cheery, positive disposition and how her face always ?glowed? with a smile. She will forever be remembered by her family, friends and colleagues for her generosity of her time, knowledge, talents, gifts, finances and resources. Carol was preceded in her passing by her older brother Dr. James Mittelstaedt and both of her parents, Dr. Stanley Mittelstaedt and Daisy Mittelstaedt, all of Little Rock, Arkansas. Carol is survived by her brother Jim?s widow, Bo Mittelstaedt of Little Rock; sister, Janet Hartman of Orlando, Florida, and sister, Lynn Warren of Little Rock, and their respective families; as well as her beloved twin Godchildren: Philip & Lauren Hartman. A memorial reception in her honor was held at The Carolina Inn on the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill campus in April 2015. A family graveside service is planned during the Thanksgiving holiday in Little Rock, Arkansas and the remainder of her ashes will be scattered at her favorite vacation spot in Hawaii per her wishes. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Dr. Carol A. Mittelstaedt are encouraged to be given to either the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure organization (www.Komen.org), or the Carolina Tiger Rescue Center (www.CarolinaTigerRescue.org).

"Glo" was my counselor at Girl Scout Camp Ouachita in 1964. As a 10 year old who was so homesick, Glo made the two weeks an adventure and I will always remember her smile. This world has lost a bright star!
