Biography: Joseph Attly Woods, Jr. age 87, of Little Rock, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday January 4, 2007. "Attly" as he was known was born in Mississippi, but moved to Arkansas as young boy, becoming a life long resident. He graduated from Little Rock High School in 1937. He enlisted in the Army Air Corp shortly after Pearl Harbor and served on active duty during both World War II and The Korean War. During the Korean War he was stationed in Korea and Japan and received the Korean and United Nations service medals. He continued service in the Arkansas Air National Guard serving in the 189th Recon Unit, retiring at the rank of Major in 1979. In 1946 he went to work at Campbell, Mallory, Colvert, and Hornor Insurance which served as the Arkansas general agency for Aetna Insurance Property, Casualty and Surety. Later this agency was reformed as Hornor-Woods-Adams Inc.; where Attly served as vice president. He was a member of the Independent Insurance Agents of Arkansas and served the association as a volunteer instructor for new agents. He retired in 1985, and he and his beloved wife Martha moved to a farm at Romance, Ar. While in Romance Attly, a 32nd Degree Mason and Martha served in the Eastern Star. They returned to Little Rock in 2004. He was a past member of the Little Rock Kiwanis Club, and a past co-president with his wife Martha of the Henderson Junior High PTA. Attly was a 55 year member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Little Rock. He was twice elected to the Vestry, and also served on the Board of The Cathedral School. He was one of the first Lay Readers at Trinity. He was the Vestry Liaison to The Retreat Singers a young adult music ministry from Trinity led by Father Edward Shippey. The Retreat Singers formed in 1965, performed throughout the United States and Western Europe until the early 70's including a private performance for the King of Sweden. Attly twice served as a chaperone on tours of the Eastern United States and The United Kingdom. His fondness for the The Retreat Singers never faded. In later years he was active until just several months before his death as a Lay Eucharistic Minister; bringing Holy Communion to shut ins. This ministry was also very close to his heart. The family wishes to thank the clergy, staff, and members of Trinity Cathedral for their pastoral care during this time. He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Margaret Woods, and his brother Morris Woods. He is survived by his wife of 66 years Martha Woods, his children Jan Eastwood and husband Bill; Joe Woods and wife Anne; Jim Woods and wife Jane; seven grandchildren Joseph, Jonathan, Campbell, Julia, and Laurel Woods; Elaine Eastwood, Jennifer Eastwood Kyle.; five nieces Judy Krug, Betty Gail Finley, Robin Kolbinskie, Kim Freeman, Roberta Chitwood, and two nephews Boyd Chitwood and Shepherd Woods. A memorial service will be held at 10:00am Monday, January 8th at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Little Rock.
