Biography: Sherman Smith passed away at the age of 60 on September 18, 2014 with his wife Delinda and family by his side. Sherman was born November 10, 1953 in Stuttgart, Arkansas. His father was Doyle Smith and mother Jewell Smith. They moved to Heber Springs when he was young. Sherman met the love of his life, Delinda in January of 1977 and then married her in May of 1978. Sherman attended the U of A where he received his degree in Civil Engineering. Sherman loved engineering and surveying, especially bridges. His greatest enjoyment in life was motorcycles and anything that had to do with motorcycles. He also enjoyed astronomy, space, hiking, scuba diving, traveling, hang gliding, star trek, but his most favorite love was being with his wife Delinda. Sherman was in many professional societies, Engineering, Surveying, Public Works, APWA, Flood Plain, and many more. He was inducted into the Arkansas Academy of Civil Engineers, and was awarded Engineer of the Year and was awarded the State Public Works Professional Engineer of the year, among many. His most beloved achievement was being appointed to the Arkansas Board of Professional Engineer?s and Surveyor?s. Sherman is survived by his wife, Delinda, his mother-n-law Hazel and father-n-law Tommy; his sister-n-laws Brenda and Laura; nieces and nephews, Ashton, Andrew, Clay, Kay, Laura Lyn, and Tiffany; one great nephew Hunter and one great niece Ravyn; one sister, Teresa Finne and her husband Russell and granddaughter, Maddie, and Bella a very special little girl whom he loved dearly. He was preceded in death by his father Jake, mother Dean and brother-in-law Joe. The following is a word from Buddy Villines whom Sherman admired greatly: ?Sherman, as Director of Public Works, was a key player in many projects the County completed during the last 17 years. From Bridge replacement to bridge building, it was his skill both as an engineer and an ability to work with people that made him an asset to our citizens. As a friend, he had a gift of humor that brought a laugh to everyone he knew.? A memorial service will be Thursday, September 25, 2014 at 10:00am at Immanuel Baptist Church. What to say..what to say?
After all this tine, I still feel the sharp, painful loss of Sherman's passing. Too soon....too soon.
I miss him terribly and will always remember him. His kindness. His smile. His laugh. We were friends and class mates. In my mind, he was the best of us. In spirit, in heart, in humanity.
I always expected him to be the last man standing. I viewed him to be the best of us.
I miss Sherman. My friend always. I will remember...

Dear Delinda:

I just heard about Sherman today. I am so sorry.
I remember attending your wedding on the Buffalo River, not very long after I first met him (and you). It was fun.

As you know, Sherman and I worked together at three different places. It got to be where I almost expected him to show up somewhere where I was working (or vice versa). Many times I wished he would show up instead of the stuffed shirts that usually do. I learned a lot from him, and we laughed a lot.

Sherman had a "bucket list" I think before the term was coined, and I have sometimes wondered about one item he would joke about wanting to do, and if it ever happened.

Oh Delinda, I am so saddened by your loss, yet I cannot think of Sherman without a smile. He brightened the day of everyone he met - what a gift. I still have a copy of the program for the "Cats Unlimited Banquet " dreamed up by him and Moseley and Thurman. Priceless! There is no telling what may be in store for the saints in Heaven now. May you find comfort in your memories and the love of those around you.
You are in our prayers, Diane and Bill Johnston

Delinda;

Please accept my condolences. I've known Sherman for many years since he went to work for the County. Sherman always had the ability to make us laugh and bring us down to earth when we got too serious. My association with him through afma has always been very positive and uplifting. He will be missed by all of us. God bless and keep you and your family through this time. You will all be in our prayers.

Delinda, My condolences. I am sorry to hear of the passing of a person I have known since grade school. Sherman helped to mentor me for the taking and passing of my Arkansas Surveying license. He was always laughing and joking and had a story to tell. I haven't seen him since I left Arkansas 13 years ago. But had visted with him at the ASPS conventions. He is a fine upstanding man and will be missed by all. We all appreciated his work with the Board that helped the Surveyors to enact many needed rules.

Sherman and I met working on a survey crew together in 1978. We were friends ever since then. We might go a year or more without seeing each other but we always seemed to pick up the conversation right where we left off. I will miss him very much.

Delinda, Teresa and family, I'll never forget the day O.D. came home and told me he had a new boss at work and his name was Sherman Smith! Once Sherman knew he was married to one of the Mason girls, they became good buds. I feel like I've known, and loved, Sherman all my life and he holds a very special place in my heart, as in many others. He will be greatly missed for so many reasons - too many to begin to list. Please know the family will continue to be in our thoughts and prayers.

Sherman made me feel welcome to county government when I began working there in 2001. His spunky sense of humor made me laugh and so often it's been needed. I'm sorry for the pain of his illness. Sorry I could not attend his retirement party but hope the flowers & balloons brightened the event.

It is difficult to know what to say, I was shocked when my brother told me of Sherman's passing. Although I haven't seen Sherman in 3 years, Sherman was one of those special people that you think of often even in his absence. Sherman never met a stranger, he wanted to be friends with everybody he met. Delinda, Teresa & Family, may the God of peace comfort you. Our days are short but eternity is long, Sherman has entered into that special place of eternal peace.

We are deeply saddened by this loss of such a wonderful person. Although not close personal friends, we have known and appreciated Sherman for many years. He will be truly missed.

Sherman was happiness and love: happy to be here and enjoying life, unfailing love for Delinda. He loved life, Arkansas and Little Rock, the beauty of nature and the outdoors, his work, friends and acquaintances and motorcycling for all those same reasons. I will always remember him as thoughtful, caring and generous.

Sherman is still here in spirit and memory. I will often remember him warmly when I take a walk or get on a motorcycle.

Ride on, friend.

Sherman will be missed by all whom knew him. He was always able to balance his professionalism with an outgoing humor that made everyone smile. He was a very accomplished and well respected engineer and surveyor. While serving in many professional organizations, he was always at the forefront as a leader, speaker and entertainer. Simply put, he liked his work and liked people. One of his interests was recovering benchmarks. It seemed to be much like geocaching but actually finding something useful to engineering and surveying. I give my sincere condolences to Delinda, as well as other family and friends. His contagious smiles and laughter, along with his contributions to the engineering and surveying communities will be missed. May you enjoy eternal peace.
