Biography: Ruth Analise Braun Ray died Tuesday, December 12 in Little Rock at the age of 85. She is survived by her husband, Victor K. Ray, and by her son, Kurt Martin Braun of Baton Rouge, LA and by her daughter, Kris Braun Huffman (Mac)) of Little Rock, and by four grandchildren: Kelly Navin (Kevin) and Courtney Gasper (Brent), all of Little Rock, and by Rebecca Braun and Martin Braun, both of Baton Rouge, LA, by step-daughter, Lisa K. Ray of Conway, and by one great-grandchild, Sophie Huffman Navin of Little Rock. Ms. Ray was born in Germany and brought at the age of five by her parents, now deceased, Karl and Wilhelmina Brobeil Ziegler to Milwaukee, WI She grew up with a brother, Heinz Ziegler and sister Doris Ziegler Singer, also deceased. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Martin Braun of Milwaukee. She came to Little Rock in 1954. In addition to being a devoted wife and mother and grandmother, Ms. Ray was active in Arkansas politics. She was president of the Little Rock League of Women Voters and was a civil rights activist during the Little Rock school integration crisis. She was an original member of the Women's Emergency Committee and active in the STOP campaign in behalf of teachers who were victims of discrimination in Little Rock Central High School. She served as secretary of the Arkansas Civil Rights Committee, and later was appointed assistant director of the Central Arkansas Equal Opportunity Project, the largest community action program in Arkansas organized in the War On Poverty during the Johnson Administration.
