Biography: Dawson Mase, age 70, died March 5, 2014 in Houston, Texas, with his wife, brother, son and daughter-in-law by his side. Born August 1, 1943, in Little Rock, Arkansas, he is survived by his loving wife of almost 45 years, Sharon Howe Mase, son Kyle Mase (Brandi), grandsons Ethan and Cameron, brother Pat Mase, sisters-in-law Judy Howe and Linda Howe, nephews William (Jessica) and Nathan Webb (Julie) and their families, his best friends Dave Frierson and Ken Ropp, four-legged best friend Berkeley and many other caring friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Naomi Mase, and best four-legged friend Sam. A graduate of Hall High School and the American Academy of Art in Chicago, Dawson enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in Viet Nam, returning as a Corporal with a Purple Heart. After serving as an MP in the Marines, he worked part time for a number of different law enforcement agencies during his other careers. He was a commercial artist, a general contractor, a fine arts artist and was working for Flexion Materials Handling while writing a memoir when he lost his long battle with cancer. A former track star, Dawson ran numerous marathons, including the Pike?s Peak Marathon, and enjoyed many hobbies. He had a life-long love for the St. Louis Cardinals, even though he rooted for the Astros after moving to Houston. His infectious laugh and goofy sense of humor made everyone crave his company. Most of all, he enjoyed life, and spending time with his family. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, relative and friend and he will be sorely missed. A graveside service will be held at noon on Monday, March 10th, at the Arkansas Veteran's Cemetery, North Little Rock, Arkansas. The family will receive guests immediately after the service at the home of Kyle and Brandi Mase. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to CanCare, Inc. (Fighting Cancer with Hope) or the Wounded Warrior Project. Arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home, www.ruebelfuneralhome.com

Dear Sharon and Pat,
I am so sorry to hear of Dawson's home going. I have such wonderful memories of family trips to Little Rock to visit Aunt Sugar and Uncle Ralph.
I always enjoyed talking to you and Dawson on the phone and hung up with a smile, except for today when you told me the sad news. Sharon I will send the pictures I found. I wish you the best. Love,
Marilyn

I met Dawson in my first year of art school. We were roommates for 2 years. We had many great times including an epic road trip from Little Rock to Florida in about 1965. I visited Dawson when he came back from Vietnam, wounded. In 1970 he showed up at my wedding in Chicago. That was the last time I saw him, though we did communicate by email a few times. I still consider Dawson one of the very best friends I have ever had. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. Tom Weyl

So sorry to hear this news. Dawson and I went to the American Academy of Art and were roommates in Chicago in the 1963-64 school year. He even came out to my home town of Morrison, IL to visit for a week one summer. We had lots of fun in those years and I saw him several times after he came back from the Vietnam and left the Marines. We lost touch over the years and I've been trying to find him for awhile now with no luck until I just happened on this obituary. All my sympathies to the family and if anyone would like to get in touch with me I'd love to talk with them. Email: stonecreatives@mac.com

Sharon, i was so sorry when i read that dawson had died. Saying goodbye to a loved-oned is never easy and finding words that convey sympathy in a meaningful way isnt either. Maybe you will find some comfort in knowing others, even dear old friends from days long gone, are thinking about you now. I will continue to remember dawson, you and all those you love who mourn his loss, as i offer-up my prayers.

Dear Sharon & loved ones,

I know this is a sad time for ya'll and I am sending prayers your way for the Lord to strengthen you and dwell in your heart to give you comfort. Loving Dawson was easy, such an easy going fella with a dry wit that put you in stitches laughing. You will forever be missed but remain in memory of those who loved you and those you loved.

So many memories of Dawson I have kept. We all worked on the 12th floor of the Boyle Building in downtown Little Rock for Wesson & Assoc. Dawson's office was next to mine. He was always so helpful when we did artwork for clients. A truly great friend. Time passed and we all went our separate ways. Then, I heard of his first battle with cancer. I told him to pray, "Jesus, thou Son of David, heal my body!" I learned later than he was well. But, as we all age, we have to learn that our home is not here, but with the Lord. God's blessings and grace to the Mase family.

Please accept my sincere sympathy in the loss of Dawson. We were friends at Hall high and reconnected in 1994 when he volunteered with a group of us to start Race for the Cure in Little Rock; his involvement meant so much to the success of this event. He was very special.

Dear Dawson, I met you so many years ago,1968 or so, and even though we haven't stayed in touch until recently, when your family took me in as one of their own, I must say you are one of the greatest men I have ever known. Your humor is something I will remember forever. Your generosity is unmatched. You are a Marine through and through. You will be missed by so many. You are now out of pain. Please look down on all of us now and know that we will take care of your family.

I love and miss you.

Sharon, I just learned about Dawson's passing, and Jimmy and I saddened deeply in our hearts! I remember all the great times we had together in LR. Have always missed you both living here. Praying for you, Kyle, grandchildren, Pat and rest of family. He was such a great friend to us both. I always loved the way he laughed and smiled. Still have some of his paintings and the ones he did with dots.

Love you, Jimmy and Betty

Very sad news. I have lots of fond and fun memories of all the great runs we did together. Van and I bought a couple of Dawson's paintings many years ago. So glad I have them. He was an extremely talented artist as well as a good man. Whatever the afterlife brings, I am sure Van and Dawson will be running together, having a beer and telling tales!

Much love to the family.

I was heart broken when family told me of Dawson's death this morning.

I have so many memories of being a child and playing with Dawson when my parents would go to Little Rock for vacation. Dawson was one of my only two first cousins. I didn't see him often but he will always be in my heart and never be forgotten.

Sharon, Pat and your family and friends, I am soooo sorry!

Love to you all!
