Biography: Pem (Julia Pemberton) Kahler November 27, 1947 ?November 5, 2013. Pem was born Julia Pemberton Kelly in Berkeley, CA, to Graham MacDonald Kelly and Julia Ferguson Kelly. She was the oldest of eight. She grew up in San Diego where she met her future husband Stephen Kahler. After graduation from Pt. Loma High School she attended Bryn Mawr College, Yale University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (M.D.). She commenced further training in psychiatry, but illness curtailed this in 1985. She and Steve have one daughter, Jean Stirling Kahler. Jean and her wife Jessica Rowe are the mothers of Graham Curtis Kahler-Rowe. Pem and Steve were married in 1970 in San Diego. They lived in Durham, NC, San Diego, Chapel Hill, NC, Melbourne, Australia, and Baltimore, before moving to Little Rock in 2005, when Steve took a position as Professor of Pediatrics at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and Arkansas Children?s Hospital. She was passionate about all of nature, with a deep love and knowledge of birds and flowers, especially roses; she loved music and was a member of the St. Mark?s choir and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Community Chorus. She kept up an extensive correspondence (and phone conversations) with dozens of relatives and friends. She read extensively (especially poetry and literature). Curiosity about color vision and perception led to a deep interest in textiles, especially Japanese silks. She was passionate about civil rights and marriage equality. And she maintained an active medical license via continuing education. She will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by her family, her siblings Graham Kelly, Jr., Susan Kelly, Molly Kelly, Nancy Kelly Johnson, John Kelly, Sarah Kelly and Anne Kelly, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends in Little Rock and around the world. She died suddenly and unexpectedly. Memorial gifts can be made to the Nature Conservancy, the Lupus Foundation of America, or St. Mark?s Episcopal Church. Visitation and viewing will be at Ruebel Funeral Home 6313 W. Markham, Little Rock, Thursday 11/14/13 6 -8 PM. Memorial service will be at St. Mark?s Episcopal Church, 1000 N. Mississippi, Little Rock, on 11/15/13 at 11 AM, with reception to follow.

Steve and Jean, I am so terribly sorry that you have lost Pem. It does not feel real nor fair. She was such a light in the world, so full of whimsy and wit and wisdom. As I reread her e-mail, her inscriptions on books over the years, it seems as though she will appear any minute, finish a row of knitting, and suggest we walk in the garden. Prayers that the hurt will fade, leaving only the wonder that she blessed your lives and the earth. All our love.

Steve and Jean and Families,
We were deeply saddened to hear of Pem's sudden and unexpected passing. We've greatly missed being able to see Pem on a regular basis ever since you left Chapel Hill but treasure the infrequent contacts we've had since. I'm also recalling fond memories of that memorable visit with Pem and the wonderful Kelly family in San Diego, now many decades ago. Please know that we have been thinking of you and send our deepest sympathies.

Dear Steve and Pem,

I'm so very sorry for your loss. Pem was such a light in this world. It's been so long since I've seen her, but I'll always remember her sweet laugh and her love for flowers and Japanese prints. I still have some of her poetry she sent me. She will be missed and my heart goes out to you both. My prayers are with you both.

Lots of love,

Steve, although it has been a while since I sang with the chorus, when we did both sing there, I found myself sitting by her many times and we had such a good time. She a very special lady in many ways, unforgettable. It was obvious to me that you had a happy life together. Keep singing....

Steve, I am so sad for you loss. It was a privilege to get to meet Pem - she was an enthusiastic and delightful lady. What an interesting life she had. That is a great legacy in itself - the people she loved and was loved by.

Dr. Kahler and family,

It's hard to think of beautiful Pem as being gone. I want you to know that I do not see it this way. Pem was always this ray of sunshine, and I am so grateful to have known such a joyful heart. Singing next to her was always a treat. She had the sweetest voice and the kindest, most gentle disposition. I never heard her speak an unkind word. And though I know she is no longer with us in this life, she is singing in the next.
I am so sad for your loss, but I know now that when people say things like: "heaven had just gained another angel," that those words are not simply for purposes of consolation... In this case it's the truth. We have lost our Pem in the physical sense... But he spirit lives on in all of us. I will continue to celebrate her life, considering her kindness and joyful spirit. Love to you all.

Dear Steve, Jean, and Family,
We are so sad for your loss. Pem had a wonderful saying, "It's either good news or a good story." That bit of wisdom that has carried me through a lot of rough patches. It was such a privilege to have known her. Our love to all of you.

I just remember Pem's joyous, almost childlike energy as she recounted (and helped Steve recount) stories from their fascinating past in Australia and elsewhere. All the wonderful times spent with her at Susana's and at concerts. She will not soon be forgotten. My condolences to you Steve.

A lovely woman who graced all she met with her joy in life. Pem and I shared an interest in art and she taught me about women and the creation of textiles. I did not know her as well as I would have liked and know that is a loss. She has been missed at St Mark's and will continue to be. God grant you peace and healing as you grieve. Sandra

I always delighted in seeing Pem's smiling face at rehearsals. My thoughts are with Dr. Kahler, who has always been so supportive of my musical endeavors. "May the road rise to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face. May the rain fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand."
