Biography: John R. ?Johnnie? Holmes, 88, of Little Rock, passed away Saturday, July 6, 2013. He was born on May 12, 1925 in Lowell, Arizona to the late John Patrick Holmes and Lenore Lee Holmes. Johnnie was a 4-H member as a youngster in the Rio Grande Valley north of El Paso, Texas. After serving in the Air Force he went on to graduate from Texas A&M with a B.S. degree in Agricultural Education. As a student, he worked at the college owned radio station where he produced and aired farm programs, collegiate FFA programs and assisted the Extension radio editor in airing regular farm and home network programs. As farm editor of WMT, an agriculturally oriented radio station in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, he wrote and broadcast radio programs. It is at one of these fairs that he met the love of his life Patricia Frances Benesh. He continued his broadcast career in Little Rock as farm service director for KLRA-AM, where he was the first full time radio broadcaster in Arkansas devoted to gathering and reporting agriculture news, then as farm service director for television station KATV, where he was responsible for a daily 30 minute television program featuring crop and livestock news, agricultural personality features and reports on special farm events. He also broadcast live reports with livestock exhibitors from the Arkansas State Fairgrounds, a first in Arkansas television. In 1956, Johnnie became secretary-manager of the American Dairy Association of Arkansas. He continued working in the dairy industry for nearly 20 years, serving first as market coordinator for the American Dairy Association of Milk Producers Inc. and in the promotion division of the Associated Milk Producers Inc. In 1975 Mr. Holmes became the Arkansas State Fair general manager and secretary treasurer of the Arkansas Livestock Show Association and was named executive vice president in 1982. In this position, he worked extensively with the Department of Education, vocational agriculture teachers and 4-H and FFA members to increase educational activities and involvement at the State Fair. In 1992, Mr. Holmes received the National Future Farmers of America?s ?Honorary American FFA Degree,? the highest award presented by the FFA. Patte:
Deeply, profoundly sorry for your loss... Uncertain how to avoid the use of the "I" word when speaking, or thinking about Johnnie as I have over the years. More than anyone, Johnnie had the greatest impact on my formative business and personal development--throughout my time working for him, and to this very day there is no one more blessed. Johnnie continually went out of his way to enrich my knowledge of facility management and the art/skill in how he managed others. Inarguably, some of the happiest years in a then young life. Moreover, Johnnie remained a staunch supporter and mentor with all three of the companies I was fortunate to run.
My heart aches... For the loss of a great man.

All my love. Larry

Patte, so sorry. Johnnie was one of my very favorite clients in 40 years in advertising and public relations. (Even if he was an Aggie.) I admired him for his work ethic, his sense of fairness, his stern protection of the State Fair organization and its staff, his vision and his honesty. I learned so much from watching him work and deal with people. He was one in a million and you were blessed to be with him for 63 years.

Uncle Johnnie is finally at peace without pain. Thank you for being a part of my life. He gave me my first camera and tape recorder. Going to the San Antonio Zoo and taking pictures was a highlight of that Christmas. Going rock hunting in Globe and seeing the raw and rough looking rocks turn into gems after they were tumbled. My Uncle was truly a diamond in the rough that over time became one of the most precious gems and polished to perfection. We will all miss you. Aunt Patte you are not alone and we all love you! My most heartfelt sympathy goes out to you and Nancy. Thank you for all you have done for me. I miss you Uncle Johnnie. God Bless, All my love Leslee your niece.
