Biography: Michael William Beard, 67, died in Little Rock on May 13, 2013. Mike was born in Pine Bluff on June 26, 1945, to Guy Beard and Virginia (Sis) Clement Beard. Except for several months in Hawaii during the Korean War when his dad was called back into military service, he lived his entire life in Little Rock where he was blessed with many friends and a close family. The Korean War ended and the Beards returned to Little Rock where Mike, his brother Robert and sister, Lynne grew up in the Heights neighborhood. Mike?s love of the outdoors began here where he enjoyed a childhood playing with friends in the Catholic College woods, roaming the neighborhood, movies at the Heights Theater and camping out at the rock quarry. Mike was an accomplished white water enthusiast and among the first in Arkansas to become interested in white water canoeing and later kayaking and rafting. He logged many adventurous river miles, always on the lookout for the upstream ferry, which was ? to hear him tell it ? always dangerously close. Highlights of his paddling years were kayaking the Grand Canyon and representing the USA during a white water competition in Siberia. Both trips provided lots of ammunition for another of his loves: the ?embellished? campfire story. He could tell some good ones and as recently as last month, he was entertaining his dinner companions by retelling the story of the Russian paddlers who had a pen of chickens next to their tent and every night the chicken census mysteriously decreased at supper time. Mike graduated from Hall High in 1963 and then spent a year working for P.C. Hardware ?finding himself? before enrolling in Arkansas State Teachers College (now known as the University of Central Arkansas). He was a member of Phi Lambda Chi fraternity and graduated in 1968 with a BS degree and immediately was compelled to become a part of the Army Reserves where he served as supply sergeant answering to his company commander and lifelong friend Steve Shepherd. Mike?s career included several years with Arkansas Farm Bureau and most recently as Fleet Manager for North Point Ford. In addition to camping and paddling, Mike enjoyed fishing, cars, guns, and motorcycles and he owned several of each at one time or another. One of his favorites was a motorcycle and sidecar that he persuaded his wife Deborah to try out ONCE. Mike married Deborah Brockman of Star City in 1978 and they settled into the Hillcrest neighborhood to raise their son, Matthew. Mike enjoyed puttering in his yard and garage. On Saturdays, he could be found ?Snapperizing? his yard or just piddling in his workshop. He could fix or build just about anything. He never met a tool that he did not need at least three of. Mike had a soft spot for dogs, cats and children. When Matthew started his family, ?Daddy Big? quickly fell in love with his granddaughter Jaina and grandson Pearson. He could be talked into doing just about anything for either of them. Mike was a member of the Arkansas Canoe Club, Ozark Society, Lakeside County Club, Benton Gun Club and the El Faco Ba Racing Team. Mike was predeceased by his father, Guy William Beard. He is survived by his mother, Virginia (Sis) Clement Beard, in addition to his wife, Deborah Brockman Beard, son, Matthew Martin Beard (Holly Colclasure), granddaughter, Jaina Nicole Beard, grandson, Pearson Charles Michael Beard. He is also survived by his brother Robert Beard of Bryant, sister, Lynne Beard Quinn (Tony) of Annandale, Virginia, and nieces, Stephanie Beard Dyer (Mark), Jessica Beard Fox (John) and their families, Abigail Quinn and nephew, Alan Quinn in addition to the proverbial host of other relatives and friends. Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 17, at Pulaski Heights Baptist Church in Little Rock. Dr. Randy Hyde will officiate. Special music will be provided by Rev. Jim Munns. Honorary pall bearers are: Kenny Holmes, Alston Jennings, Steve Shepherd, Gary Gazette, Basil Hicks, John McKellar, Bonnie Limbird, and Pat Holthoff. Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday, May 16, at the church. Memorials may be made to Pulaski Heights Baptist Church, 2200 Kavanaugh, Little Rock, AR 72205, CARE or the American Cancer Society.

I worked with Mike as a part of the "fleet team" starting at Walt Bennett Ford and then in Benton. His co-workers and customers became his friends because that is just how he was. He will be missed. The Beard Family is in my prayers.

Deborah: I enjoyed the mention of Mike roaming the Heights neighborhood, going to movies at the Heights theater and camping in the rock crusher. Brought back a flood of good memories. I was with Mike on many of those escapades as was Gary Gazette and a few others. We had some good times and raised more than a little h--- in our younger days. I reconnected with Mike many times over the years and always enjoyed his company. He will surely be missed. My best to you and the family.

Indeed, this is the rare obituary befitting the man. His garage/shop was truly a place of wonder for a little kid the times I visited it. Above all, Mike was a man known by me to love his wife, and to love his life.

I also think he wore that shirt the day I got married. If not, it was mighty close.

My thoughts and prayers to Deborah, Matthew, and their family.

Remembering Mike...
I first met Mike as an undergraduate student at Astc in 1966 (now Univ. Central Arkansas). In the fall that year we pledged Phi Lambda Chi fraternity. We were a small class, only seven of us, but unique in many ways (mainly because of Mike). He was a "little" loud and boisterous, always fun to be around, and a man of many talents. He was a "Jack-of-all-trades"... Yet, unlike the proverbial "Jack" who was "master of none", Mike had skills. He loved guns...but he didn't just plink at targets like most...he was a sharpshooter. He enjoyed the outdoors. He was an avid kayak-er and canoeist and again was very accomplished. He pursued his interests with passion, always giving his best. However, the true measure of a man is the indelible mark he leaves behind on the lives of others. In that regard, Mike was a "giant of a man" impacting all who came to know him. He will not soon be forgotten... NO, he will NOT be forgotten. He was a true friend. If fortunate enough to have even one friend like Mike in a lifetime, one should consider themselves truly blessed. Rest in Peace, my friend.

Deborah and Family, please know you will be in my thoughts and prayers as you transition to life without Mike. Though your grief is great, the fond memories of your journey through life with Mike are greater and over time will help to fill the hugh void you now experience.

I met Mike when I was a twenty year old, just getting into the car business. He was a great friend and mentor. Mike was always willing to lend an ear, and offer good advice. If you were down, Mike would always lift you back up. Mike, you and your great smile, personality, jokes, and stories will truly be missed!

One of the things I remember about Mike was the way he always welcomed me and others to join in on the next river trip. This may not sound like a big deal to some, but it is ? when you start trying to ?step up? to harder rivers, some folks don?t want to take new people because they don?t want to have to ?baby sit? you on the river. Not Mike! He was always very generous about sharing what he new and taking others along.

I also remember his skill at building boats, often from parts of previously wrecked canoes. To this day, one of the ?strangest? boats I own is a 7 foot long (yes, seven feet) square stern aluminium canoe, that was one of Mike?s creations, made from the salvageable portions of a 17? square stern he found wrapped around a tree somewhere. I made the mistake of admiring it briefly out in Mike?s back yard, 30 seconds later it was mine.

Watching Mike work to free a boat pinned on rocks by the force of the river is another one of my memories; he used some specialized rope tricks that were not well known 25 or 30 years ago. It seemed like magic at the time, and sparked my own life-long interest in river rescue techniques. And yes, he was in fact a master of campfire stories, and you know what? I think most of them were true!

Like others, I?ll miss you Mikey, but we won?t forget. Rest in Peace.

Deborah:

We are deeply saddened by your loss. You and Mike accepted and treated us as friends. We cherish the memories of being with both of you especially at holiday celebrations where you always remembered to invite us. You were such a kind, warm, generous and sincere couple. Mike will be sorely missed in our thoughts and hearts, especially at these times.

I can't imagine that Mike ever met a person, dog, canoe, creek, forest or motorcycle that he didn't like and appreciate and know that all of those things felt the same about him.

With love,

I have thought continually about the good, fun and occasionally crazy times with Mike. There was no stretch of boring road that he could not make entertaining, no adventure that he could not make more memorable. His big smile, big laugh, big ideas and smart-ass remarks could lighten any situation. Mike has moved on downstream and the world is a little quieter and just a little too serious. Adios El Faco Ba.

Deborah, Matthew, and extended family: Words will never describe the influence Mike had on me, Joyce, Greg, and Amanda. He held on long enough for one last Mother's Day!! You knew you were "family" at the Beard house once Mike told you where he hid the key to the garage. Whether it was searching for that car part made of "Unobtainium", cruising a river or going to a slalom race, or "gentiling" someone down on the price they wanted for their used canoe, Mikey was in a class by himself. , May God comfort you and your extended family in these toughest of days, but rejoice in the knowledge that one day you will all be reunited.

Over the years my Dad has told me stories about Mike and over the years Mike has told me stories about my Dad that I am sure he would like Mike to have kept to himself. Well there was the one about..... You know the stories you don't want your kids to hear, because you are the parent. Mike always had a good time. It didn't matter whether we were talking while at the dealership to get an oil change or mostly at cars shows, you just picked up the conversation like it was a few minutes ago. Mike and I had talked about upcoming car shows like the Hot Rod Power Tour and the Great Race cross country trips stopping in Arkansas. He really wanted to go to both and many more, so he will in spirit. We?ll meet up at the last stop.

A few weeks back Mike and I went to a car show and rode around in the Mustang. I had been driving conservatively, Mike egged me on to ?let the hammer down!? So we did, my daughter got phone calls from her friends and husband that were at the car show and they were impressed, mainly that Mike got me to do it. Mike loved it and the cars. We really had a great time, nothing like hearing a mustang in full race trim and running it on the freeway. It felt like we were in high school again. A few days later, Chuck Kelly sent an email to us that said ?look you and Mike are famous?. Someone in passing took a picture of us in the car and sent it out to him. We are sorry for your loss, he will be greatly missed.

To Deborah, Sis, Matthew, Jaina, Robert and all Mike's beloved family... Though we are in East Tenn. we are deeply aggrieved to learn of our loss of my excellent cousin and classmate from Hall High's Class of '63. Mike and his Dad, my first cousin Guy Jr., gave me rides to Hendrix 1960s when I had no other way to get there for college. Both always were giving to others; and the Beard family was very special to my mother, Nola Beard Dean, and her sister Bernice Rash. Mom and Dad, in the 1940s, managed B. Guy Beard's Blue Bird Tourist Court on US 70, the old Memphis Hwy. near Rose City. And I recall from my youth happy visits to B. Guy Beard Furniture Store on W. 7th in LR and to the Acme Motel on W. Roosevelt. I fondly remember seeing Mike at Beard family reunions held at Old Bolivar Cem. near Harrisburg. The Beards are a strong family and will fare well despite our loss. But please know our loving thoughts are with you now. Regina, Jerry and children

Deborah

The only reason I accompanied Rita to LR last week was to see Mike. I wasn't even sure I'd be able to see him but Kenny said sure, we'll go by. So my spur of the moment decision turned out to be a good one. Last Saturday, a week ago, I got to see Mike Beard the way I'll always remember him--animated, telling funny shit and generally the guy I always knew. I feel so fortunate to have spent some time with him.

One time about 25 years ago he offered a positive analysis of the way I ran a rapid on the Middle Fork. That has stuck with me for all of these years.

I'll try my best to get down there Friday. If I can't make it for the ceremony I'll be thinking of Mike and you.

GS

P.S.: I swear that I never knew that Mike was actually born in Pine Bluff. Maybe that's part of our connection.

Mike and I were friends continually, 1964 until now. Over those years, he took me into his parents home to live for a time, he and I went to college together at Conway, we were fraternity brothers, shared life's ups and downs. I'll never forget one of Mike's former employers telling Mike, "If you take time off to go to Russia for a kayak trip, you're fired." (Mike went, and was fired. That was Mike.) Now, Mike, you'll be able to float forever- no budgets, jobs, or deadlines. RIP Beard!
