Biography: W. Ross McCain, Jr. age 82, of Little Rock, died Monday, October 30, 2006. He was born July 21, 1924 in Hartford, Connecticut to the late W. Ross and Dorothy Mae Foster McCain. He is preceded in death by a sister Elisabeth “Betty” McCain Swan, a daughter Pamela Nelson McCain and a wife Bertyle Nelson McCain. He is survived by his wife Beverly Jackson McCain of Little Rock, children; W. Ross McCain, III. And wife Beth, Thomas McCain and wife Missy, Howard McCain and wife Rachael, Jim Hathaway and wife Gael, Jeff Hathaway and wife Laura, John Hathaway and wife Beth, Grandchildren; W Ross McCain, IV. And wife Nicole, Charles, Pam, Megan, Michael, Katie, Michelle, and Nelson McCain, David, Mary Grace, and Helen Hathaway, and Caroline O’Keefe, great-grandchild, W. Ross McCain, V., all of Little Rock. Ross was a member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, member of the Country Club of Little Rock, a former member of the Epworth Heights Board of Trustees, a former Cub Scout pack master and he chaired several United Fund campaigns. Ross graduated from Deerfield Academy Prep School in 1942 before attending Yale University. His education was interrupted by World War II as he enlisted in the Army Air Corp as a flight instructor in 1943. He was stationed at Craig Air Base where he met his first wife Bertyle Nelson. In 1945 Ross re-entered Yale and graduated in 1948 with a degree in Economics, Having been captain of the Yale lacrosse team earning the nickname “Ross Lacrosse”. After college he married and in 1950 moved to Little Rock, to begin his career with the Phoenix Group Insurance (of Hartford, CT.). Moving to Dallas, Texas in 1956 he became manager of all of the Texas field offices for the company. Spurning an offer to move to Hartford to the main offices, Ross joined Rector, Means, and Rowland as a insurance Executive, moving to Little Rock in 1963. In the late 1960’s he went to work for Billy Rector of Rector, Phillips, and Morse as a commercial realtor: becoming Executive Vice President and attaining the first designation in Arkansas of Certified Shopping Center Manager (CSM). He helped to develop the Village Shopping Center, Southwest City Mall in Little Rock, the Rose City Shopping Center and The Other Center in North Little Rock. In 1981 Ross married Beverly Jackson, retiring from RPM soon after. Ross and Bev enjoyed playing golf tournaments around the state with friends, taking cruises about the world and spending summers at Epworth Heights in Ludington, Michigan; watching sunsets off the porch of their cottage. Ross and Bev loved spending time with their extended family, on several occasions taking all of them on cruises in the Caribbean. The large family met every month to celebrate birthdays, the number growing to 29 with their first great-grandson, W. Ross McCain, V. A friend to all, a kind and gentle man with a great sense of humor, Ross thought the best of everyone. Papa will be greatly missed. There will be a memorial service Thursday, Nov. 2, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral officiated by The Very Reverend Henry Hudson. A reception will follow at Morrison Hall at the church.
