He was born on November 10, 1914, in Green Bay, WI, to Amy (DeSwarte) and Martin R. Fleischer. He attended Beloit College on a full scholarship from 1932-1936, and later worked as a correspondent for United Press and Time Magazine during World War Two, covering the European Theater of Operations. After retiring from the U.S. Foreign Service, he opened a new chapter in his life, as a Public Information Officer with the United Nations Federal Agricultural Organization in Rome. He and his wife spent the next 20 years in Italy, living on a centuries-old farm they owned, where they made wine, olive oil, and raised chickens. The Fleischer’s moved to Petit Jean Mountain in 1990 to be closer to their daughter and granddaughters. He is survived by Ann-Charlotte, his wife of 61 years; one daughter, Josie Fleischer (Chuck) Cote’ of Midland, MI; 2 granddaughters, Charlotte Thompson (Tim)Proffitt of Houston, TX, and Amy Thompson (Tommy) Martin of Little Rock; 6 great-grandchildren, who had the great joy and privilege to know and love their great-grandfather; and special friend, Bruce Bartley. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2006 in the Chapel of Ruebel Funeral Home officiated by the Very Reverend Henry Hudson. In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made to Arkansas Hospice, 5600 W. 12th Street, Little Rock, 72204. Arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home, www.ruebelfuneralhome.com.
