Biography: E. Dail Stiles, age 70, died at St. Vincents Medical Center on April 9, 2013 from complications of acute myeloid leukemia. He is survived by his wife , Nancy Black Stiles, his daughter, Erin Nichols (Sean) and his grandsons, Riley Hunter and Connor Hunter, sister, Diane Busher (Chuck), nieces, Kellie Rodgers (Chase) and Kim Durand (Jonathan) and many cousins. He also leaves behind his sweet Gabby cat. He played tackle for the Malvern Leopards and graduated from Malvern High School in 1960. He continued his education and obtained a degree in English from Henderson State Teachers College in 1964. After graduation he was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and was assigned duty in Virginia and Korea where he served as Post Adjutant. After active duty Dail worked for The Travelers Insurance Company in Hartford, Connecticut and Dallas, Texas. In 1969 he married Nancy Black and they moved to Fayetteville, Arkansas in 1970 where he enrolled in law school at the University of Arkansas. He was awarded his J. D. in 1973. In 1974, Dail was appointed to serve as Municipal Judge for Grant County by then Governor Dale Bumpers. While in Sheridan he also served as a Grant County Deputy Prosecutor and served as a special Deputy Prosecutor for the llth Judicial District. In 1977 he became an Administrative Law Judge with the Arkansas Workers? Compensation Commission and except for a hiatus of approximately one year to serve as Prosecutor Coordinator for the State of Arkansas, he continued as an Administrative Law Judge with Worker?s Compensation for the next 27 years. In 2004 he received an appointment as a Federal Administrative Law Judge for the Social Security Administration and remained until his retirement in 2010. Dail was a lover of words, both spoken and written. It was through his love of books that he forged the bonds of friendship with many people. He especially loved to read US Civil War history, US political history and a good old mystery. He had an amazing ability to remember facts, both trivial and important and could quote lines from books as well as movies. He loved stories and had a treasure trove of fact and fiction he enjoyed sharing over and over with friends and family. He also was a lover of music and played guitar and sang from the time he was in junior high. In college he played in a band and in later years frequently got together with friends and family to pick and grin. He looked forward to seeing his beloved grandsons grow up into fine young men. He handled his death sentence with dignity and grace as he did most important events in his life. He will be missed by all he touched during his life. The family would like to thank Dr. Joseph Beck and his staff for their compassionate care and concern as well as Dr. Bilal Sadiq. All of the staff on 7E at St. Vincents as well as the Outpatient Infusion Center gave the best possible care not only to Dail but the entire family. We all thank you. Dail and I go back to our Henderson State Teachers College days. We have crossed paths over the years in our public service. Dail was an engaging, fun person and a Judge of great ability and class!

Dail was one of the first I met at our law school. He always had a funny story or word for all who listened. We picked guitar together many times and he was one of the principal actors in our law school parody. As a professional in his area, he was the best I knew. He was always on point and fair in his rulings and well liked by his fellow lawyers. Nancy was so patient when Dail and I would sit in their living room and talk and play guitars. I won't ever forget him. Nancy and Erin, he was a marvelous friend to me. God bless you both and we'll see Dail again, I'm sure.

It was our blessing to have been friends with Dail Stiles - an honorable man; William Penn wrote: ?A true friend freely advises justly, assists readily, adventures boldly, takes all patiently, defends courageously and continues a friend unchangeably.? This quote was uttered long ago however these words are fitting terms to describe Dail. We are better people for having had him in our midst. May all who knew Dail Stiles in this lifetime, rest assured, today his soul is in Paradise with Jesus Christ and the angels. May memories of him linger for generations and always include wise words and a smile.

The more he leaned forward, and as the voice softened, the better the story was going to be. Anybody that knew "Stiles" was better for it. His tolerance made him a fine judge. A party could tell their story as long as they needed to. The mediocre lawyer was given the utmost respect and deference. His memory will make us smile.

Funny and profane, an inexhaustible wellspring of homespun sayings, master of the expedient exaggeration, teller of tales, keen observer of human foibles. Dail Stiles proves beyond question that Malvern is the incubator of clever people.

As a court reporter for the Arkansas Workers' Compensation Commission, I always enjoyed having Judge Stiles as the ALJ on hearings. There was never a dull moment. I loved his storytelling, even the ones he told about court reporters. Erin and my son, Bryan, are around the same age and we often discussed our children. Family was very important to him. When he left the Commission I was able to keep up with him through the other Judges. I will truly miss Judge Stiles. I doubt there will be another like him.

Thoughts and Prayers for the whole family. I remember Dail very well from high school and later as a ALJ in my capacity as a legal assistant to an attorney in Little Rock. It was fun to reconnect with him after all those years. Warmest wishes to his family.

I am so deeply saddened to know that Uncle Dail has passed on. I know we didn't see each other a lot but I always loved the time we shared. I will miss him and all of the GREAT stories I remember him telling me all the way back to when I was a child. A kind, loving generous man that no doubt will be missed by all who loved him. I am so sorry for your loss Aunt Nancy and Erin. I love you.

As we are out of the state, we will not be able to attend the service, but our hearts, thoughts and prayers will be with you. Dail was not only a college roomate of my husband; he was a lifelong friend....one of the funniest men we knew....with a heart of gold. He also joins the ranks of that rare type of person.....the one you will never forget. We will miss him.

Few people have the God-given ability to impact the lives of everyone they meet in a positive way. Dail was one of those persons. He was at home equally with kings and paupers. Everyone sought his presence because they knew they would be enriched by the time they spent with him. Dail was a curious combination of complexity and simplicity. Soon into a conversation with him, you knew he was a complex thinker. His observations of human nature and situations produced simple truths. He'll be missed greatly.

Nancy and Erin, you are in my thoughts and prayers. He was a wonderful kind and generous man who did many things for others that you probably never knew. He was unfailingly kind and patient and entertaining, and riding in the car with him to those workers comp hearings was never dull! He helped me get my first real "not working for my mom" job by writing possibly the best reference letter ever, and was someone I thought the world of. He will be missed. Much love!

Life became a lot less funnier and we all lost a dear friend, mentor and collegue. A good man and a story teller without match. From the high speed wobbles to the Jewish Doctor and "pick up Hogan, I hear you breathing",the Stiles stories and lexicon will endure in our family.Churchill may have said it best,"I am ready to meet my Maker.Whether my Maker is prepared for the great
ordeal of meeting me is another matter."It was no ordeal to know and love Dail Stiles.

I am truly sorry I had longstanding plans to be out of town and will miss Dail's funeral. I'm glad that I was able to see him in the hospital at a time that he was in good spirits which is the way I will remember him. Having worked with him and been his friend I had many conversations with
Dail over the years and always had a smile on my face after they ended. He is now in a much better place. I will miss him.
