Biography: Anne Jones Banks of Little Rock died Wednesday morning, October 25, 2006, at the UAMS Medical Center at the age of 91. Born January 30, 1915, she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Bass Jones of Pine Bluff where she spent the early years of her life. She was educated at Stuart Hall in Staunton, Virginia and Rollins College, Winter Park, Florida, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. After college, she spent a year in France and traveled through Europe extensively, witnessing firsthand the tumultuous events that afflicted the continent prior to World War II. In 1937 she married Richard Holmes Banks of Fordyce whose well known family was engaged in the insurance, lumber and railroad business. The couple lived in Memphis, Tennessee during the war years and moved to Fordyce after the war. From 1959 to 1964 she worked with her husband at the A. B. Banks Insurance Company in Fordyce. Following his death in 1964, she continued that work for another six years and then moved to Little Rock in 1970 where she resided until her death. Organizational skills were among her many talents and she was an active member of the the Hawthorne Book Club of Pine Bluff, the Junior League of Little Rock, the Colonial Dames, the Country Club of Little Rock, and St. Margaret's Episcopal Church. She was an outstanding community leader and a creative force who is credited with starting many organizations including the Junior Auxiliary of Pine Bluff, which became the Junior League of Pine Bluff, and the Girls Cotillion Club of Pine Bluff. She was known throughout her life as an exceptional dancer and was a founder and a president of Anthesis, a dance club in Little Rock. She loved the theater and all types of music and regularly attended Broadway play openings in New York. She traveled throughout the world on numerous trips with family and friends. Her magnetic personality and joie de vivre left an indelible mark on everyone who knew her. She had a gift for easily connecting with different types of people and had adoring friends of all ages. Her generosity of spirit, her quest for adventure and excitement, her gregarious nature, and her unquenchable desire to have a good time and to always be "on the go" will be sorely missed by those who knew her. She was a delightful and exhilarating presence who had an insatiable curiosity and influenced everyone she met. She was a caring and giving person who loved her family and her friends unconditionally. Her sole wish in life was for those near and dear to her to be happy and content. In later life, her grit and determination in the face of many obstacles were an inspiration to all. The family expresses deep appreciation to the health care professionals at the UAMS Medical Center who provided expert and compassionate care during the last years and final days of her life. She is survived by her daughter, Charlotte Banks Brown and her husband, Justice Robert Laidlaw Brown; one grandson, Stuart Laidlaw Brown and his wife, Victoria Kumpuris Brown; and her sister, Rachel Jones Williams of Virginia Beach, Virginia. Other survivors are her nephews: Richard Jones Williams of Richmond, VA; Stuart Latham Williams of Virginia Beach, VA.; John Walker Jones, of New Orleans; George Banks Collins, of Chicago; Richard Leighton Collins, of Ijamsville, MD, and her nieces: Martha Jones Mason, of Raleigh, NC; Carter Williams Whitlatch, Concord, CA; and Tyler Williams Rubio, Mission Viejo, CA. She was preceded in death by her brother, John Walker Jones, and his wife, Catherine Ann Shepherd Jones of Pine Bluff. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Little Rock on Monday, October 30, 2006, at 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Reynolds Institute on Aging at UAMS, 4301 West Markham, Slot 748, Little Rock, AR 72205 or the Dallas County Museum, P.O. Charlotte and all Anne's family, I am saddened about your mom's passing but rejoice in her everlasting life with our Lord. What memories of her I will charish all my life. What a 'Steel Magnolia'. I was so happy to see her when Carter came a couple of weeks ago and man, was she ever the Anne I remembered. What inspiration and true grit she displayed...she will always live in my heart and soul, one of my most unforgettable characters, and that she was. I wish I could have been with you all..I was there in spirit and always will be. Thanks, Anne, for the memories. In love and peace, Mari LeMay Vought

I was saddened to hear that Mrs Banks had fallen asleep in death, but could not help but smile at the mere thought of how much joy she brought to those she came into contact with. I was the recipient of much of that joy. I loved her and I will miss her. As Jesus said:(John 5:28,29) "All those in the memorial tomb will hear his voice and come out", and I look forward to seeing her in the resurrection.
I feel truly blessed to have known her. I know all of you will miss her. Gloria

Dear Charlotte and Bobby: I remember Anne well from the two occasions I saw her, your marriage and Bobby's swearing-in. Her picture on this web-site brings back a smile. She seemed to me to be one of the few powerful Southern matriarchs who could gracefully cross the barrier from being called "Mrs. Banks" by her daughter's friends to being called "Anne." Melinda, Spencer, Will, John, and I send our love to all the family.

Dear Family,

I am the daughter of Emma Brooks. She was Mrs. Banks seamstress for many years. I have very fond memories of Mrs. Banks. Always full of life and never met a stranger.
I would like to express my thanks for Mrs. Banks' friendship toward my Mother. Mrs. Banks would visit Mother and take her to lunch and for an occassional manicure. This made my Mother's day!! Mrs. Banks was a wonderful woman and will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. God Bless.

Dear Charlotte, Bob, Stuart and Victoria,

Although we've talked on the phone and emailed, I wanted to make a comment here. The obituary was excellent. I learned so much more about your mother's full 91 years in reading it. You really described her well. Nice picture too! xxx Anne

What a wonderful obit that so splendidly captures her vibrant "life force." By all means, celebrate the life that she was and know that she's doing high kicks in the heavenly line dance. Dotty Stirling, now 92, appears to be close behind your mom. She is deaf and blind and bedridden in a nursing home (now with hospice care). And yet she finds something of value in each day, and her heart continues to beat. We will feel like you do when she is finally released to wholeness once more.
Please know that you all are in my thoughts and prayers.
Love, Debby
