Biography: Evelyn Mary Smart, 95, of Little Rock died Thursday, February 14, 2013, in Little Rock. She was born July 21, 1917, in Canfield, Ohio, and moved to Little Rock as a young child. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Dick and Bob, and a host of four-legged friends. Although Evelyn never married or had children of her own, she was a loved member of the family of Donna and David Smith, Mary Katherine Smith, and Sam Smith and his wife Rickie, all of Little Rock. Through her love of teaching and her love of others, Evelyn also shaped the life of her long-time church family at St. Paul United Methodist Church. She was also very appreciative of the help she received from two very special caretakers, Iris Reed and Ki Bowie. Miss Evelyn, as she was lovingly known, loved baseball, especially the St. Louis Cardinals and the Arkansas Travelers, and anything purple. She also enjoyed Razorback basketball, catfish, donuts and HB?s Barbecue. She worked for many years at National Old Line Insurance. She was an active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church since 1943, where she was a children?s Sunday School teacher; was a member of the Saxon-Orr Sunday School Class, the United Methodist Women and the Me Third Club; and was named a Pillar of the Church in 1990. She always enjoyed a shopping trip and, in her later years, was particularly fond of QVC. Before residing at Good Shepherd Retirement Center, she lived in the Heights neighborhood of Little Rock. Miss Evelyn never learned to drive a car, but walked to all her favorite places including Hall?s Drug Store, Heights Thriftway, St. Paul and to lunch at Browning?s and Bard?s. Miss Evelyn had a sharp mind to the very end, and never forgot a special day. She looked forward to celebrating holidays and birthdays, and voted without fail in every election. Although she looked forward to seeing her friends and family, each visit was a little more special when the visitors were accompanied by a dog. We know she was greeted by a heavenly host of wagging tails and kisses when she arrived at Heaven?s gates. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., Tuesday, February 19, at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 2223 Durwood Road, Little Rock, Ark. 72207. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to St. Paul United Methodist Church. An online guestbook is available at www.ruebelfuneralhome.com.
