My first time behind the controls of an airplane was with Mason at my side. I was nervous at first, but he was so laid back and knowledgeable that he had me completely at ease before we ever took off.

I didn't know Mason for very long, but it didn't take long to realize that he was a genuine and talented guy. When he talked about music, his love for it was obvious, and his love of flying was obvious from his patience as an instructor and the way he smiled every time we rolled down the runway. It was a privilege to be his student, and I very much wish I and others who hadn't yet had the opportunity could have gotten to know him better.

My deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Mason Mauldin,a 'Great Arkansan', cultured, compassionate, and creative. If only we could all be more like him..

Mason and I were co-workers at Red Door, where we became close friends. His sense of humor and our common interests, made my return home to Little Rock (and waiting tables) something bearable. He introduced me to his great network of friends and allowed me to tag along with him at night, after work. Our time together was well spent...

What's left of my heart, goes out to those of you blessed to know him longer.

Dear Jan & Bill,

We have fond memories of working with you/seeing you on a regular basis, Jan, in the Hamilton, Mackey, Johnson & Hicks days, when Mason was a darling child. Words cannot explain our sorrow at your loss. The priest at a family funeral several years ago said, "Take the good of his life and make it a part of your own", and, "Try to forget how he died....remember how he lived." Peace and love to you and your family.

Dear Mr.and Mrs. Mauldin, I was so sad to hear the news of Mason's death. He was a favorite of mine at the YMCA. I loved, loved, loved Mason! He was sensitive, caring, kind, respectful, cute as ever, and athletic. He was one of those kids that always wanted to play kickball! He was always a joy to be around. You raised an awesome young man. He accomplished much in his short life. Please know how sorry I am for your loss. He was truly a special person. You are in my heart and prayers.

Precious Mauldin and Hines family, I'm just so very sorry for your loss. My heart aches for you. Ms. Jan and Mr. Bill, I can't imagine your pain, though Dayna and Damon, I know yours all too well and I'm devastated for you and with you. Your family is so dear to mine, as you know. I wish I had gotten to spend more time getting to know Mason as an adult, though I got to see he was an amazing musician, pilot, Olympic contending soccer player... and just cool guy. Clearly, he had the genetic genius you all do as you excel at all you pursue. I remember Mason playing soccer in our adjoining yards, probably 3 or 4 years old, in his "Class of 00" shirt thinking how far into the future that sounded. He was so quick, focused and adept on his feet even then. Remember the times he would play with words, like "chicken," in every inflection, tone, accent he could think of -- "chicken, chucken, chooken")? I remember how sweet Damon and Dayna always were with Mason and how much he looked up to you...I believe your influence is a big part of why he was good at so many things. You are all brilliant. I like to think about Todd welcoming Mason with open arms... or maybe a hand clasp, shoulder bump and manly back slap. The hole left by these great guys who lived life to the fullest is huge. I pray for comfort for you all and a peace that surpasses our understanding. You are on my heart constantly and in my prayers continually. I pray I get to hug you all very soon. I love you. I met Mason at Central Flying Service's flight training department. He assisted me with flight related questions and I also had the oppurtunity to recieve flight training from him a few weeks ago. His calm demeanor and open and friendly attitude are the things I will remember about Mason. I want his family to know that he was respected and well liked by everyone he came in contact with. I am certain he has left a positive influence on so many people and his legacy will live on in numerous ways.

Mason was blessed with a genuine, unique spirit that was his alone. He was self- directed in all phases of his life. His spirit will live with us forever. I am a better person for having known Mason. Flying and music motivated his life daily. They were his heart and soul. We should all be so lucky to be able to live what we love daily for whatever time we have on this earth. Go rest high on that mountain Mason. You are flying in that BIG sky now and I know you are smiling that infamous 'Mason' smile. Thanks for being a part of my 'family' for a time.

I received my flight training alongside Mason for the last 4 years. He even instructed me a little when he was a brand new instructor. He always seemed in such a good mood and always had his funny sense of humor! He worked hard and flew like we all wanted to - nonstop. The last few days I keep thinking of Mason when I'm up flying...I get sad and scared...but then I remember his passion and bravery and eagerness, and realize that I can't be afraid. I takeoff and do what we all have been trained to do. We fly high and we live well. It's what Mason did everyday. He will be missed, but very much remembered.

Mason was an excellent instructor and helped me understand certain things about flying I just could not grasp. To his family I share this poem I found with you.

"Gravity" a poem by Bob Moore

We men of flying, with planes so light
Building each one for an enjoyous flight
Hoping to prove our magnificent skills
pay off with a flight of soaring thrills

We test and tune with such great care
Hoping to keep it a flight in the air
Heading the wings straight into the wind
Knowing that gravity will win in the end

We use the lightest woods, keeping items so small
to enable our planes to lift and not fall
But no matter what we do, gravity never does release
bringing us back to earth not always in one piece.

But in life affairs, and in ones' days beyond
Our friend has been released from this gravity bond
to soar up so high, above the clouds and air
for Heaven welcomes his final landing there.

I met Mason in 2010, when I started working for CFS. He was still a student. Later, he took a job to help me in the office. He and I became very good friends. I love Mason, he was my favorite. I will never forget our talks, our arguments and our laughs. He was my saving grace so many times. He always made me laugh and the hugs he gave me when I was down. My heart keeps breaking and my tears haven't stopped. My prayers are with you all.
