Sharon and I have many fond memories of James.
Buster was sailing (racing) with James in his Windmill at Grand Maumelle Sailing Club. The wind died completely. While other sailors sat in frustration, Buster was entertained by James with a historical recital of Lord Nelson's victory on the Nile. We were with a group that had enjoyed a feast at the old Brunos. James had just completed a lobster dinner and commented "if the rest of the world could eat like this, there would be no world population problem". James was an absolute delight.

"Buttry" as we called him when we were growing up in Jonesboro was a close and highly valued friend during our younger days We had many adventures and experiences. I always thought highly of him and it saddened me greatly to learn of his death. I regret that I did not know in time to attend the service, but my thoughts are with Virginia Ann and the family. I will always have very good memories of my friend.

Jim Buttry was a good lawyer, a good friend and a fine man. When we would drive together and pass through almost any little town in Arkansas, Jim would say, "Magness (or whatever town we were passing through), we brought them water." I wonder if even Rickey Carter knows how many people today have good, clean running water because of Jim Buttry.

Since Jim called to thank me for a set of Rumpole of the Bailey videotapes just a few days ago, it was a great shock to learn of his passing. We were both fans of the cranky barrister and 'she who must be obeyed.' It is a great loss to his family, friends, neighbors, and the fellow practitioners of the "most honorable profession" that Jim's wit and wisdom will no longer be available to us. His passing will leave a void for us all. God's solace and blessings for you, Virginia Ann, and your family.

Jim and I served together in Army Judiciary, Army JAG Corps, back in the late mid-sixties. He was a great friend. We had memorable sailing adventures with him on the Chesapeake Bay, even after we were both out of the service and practicing law. We visited Jim and Virginia Ann in Little Rock, and fished with them in Missouri. We loved Jim who was a very special man. We love Virginia Ann too, and send her and the boys our genuine nd heart-felt condolences. Frank and Leila Martin in Magnolia Springs, Alabama

Jim was a wonderful person and friend that I talked with on many subjects over the years as we saw each other daily usually in the elevator of the First Commercial Building as he went to the Friday Firm. My wife has been a special friend with Virginia Ann over the years.
We will miss Jim dearly as all of his many friends.

Jim is a great person. One of those rare individuals
who make you feel better just to be around him. He reminds me of a western character like John Wayne or Gary Cooper. He is a person who always lifted us up and made us feel better. He will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.

I've had the privledge of working with Mr. Buttry for over 30 years in my job with USDA/Rural Development. Being a young USDA employee learning the water and wastewater financing business in 1980, Mr. Buttry was always helpful and kind in working through the legal issues in financing these systems. Often times, we had to hold the hand of the local attorneys, as they did not know the system for doing this financing. During this time, we was a calming voice on the telephone. We worked together for more that 28 years, before I had my first occassion to meet him in person.

We know that God will take care of Mr. Burry and his family in the same admiring way that Mr. Buttry took care of his State and the USDA employees who called upon him for help.

God Bless you all for sharing Jim with us.

Rickey Carter

Mr. Buttry's Family:

It has been an honor working on the same floor with Mr. Buttry for the past 14+ years. He truly is one the kindest men I've known. He had a special way of touching your heart. He always had a smile on his face and was such a delight to visit with.

Our FEC lunchroom crew had great times filled with laughter in the lunch room over the years playing the trivia games we play every day at 12:10 pm sharp. Mr. Buttry always had a quip to make and a history lesson to share. We have learned so much from the vast knowledge he always shared with us and the stories he would tell. It amazed me how he knew so much about most subjects. He always made us laugh.

Over the years I would see him in the hallway wearing his trademark bow ties, and comment to him how "Dapper" he looked. He would chuckle with a blush and say thank you. When I think of him, I always remember him wearing a bow tie & a big smile on his face.

I will miss him.
Prayers & Blessings!
