Biography: Steven Mark ?Steve? Bryles, age 55, of Little Rock and Blytheville, passed away Friday, December 28, 2012, at Baptist Hospital in Little Rock after a valiant battle with esophageal cancer. He served as a State Senator, 2001-10, representing Mississippi and Poinsett Counties in his native Delta. At the time of his death, he was the Director of the Arkansas Livestock & Poultry Commission. He was born September 17, 1957 in Piggott, Ark., and was the eldest son of Mark Benjamin Bryles and Velma Louise McReynolds Bryles of Blytheville. Steve leaves in mourning and to cherish his memory his beloved wife Pamela Morehead Bryles of Little Rock and their children Emily Fitzgerald Bryles of Fayetteville, Caitlyn Fitzgerald Bryles of Little Rock and Mark Benjamin (Ben) Bryles of Little Rock. His wife and children were the center of his life. Steve graduated from Blytheville High School in 1975 and attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville where he majored in Agricultural Economics and joined Sigma Chi Fraternity. He was a Life Loyal Sig. In 1984, Steve launched his 27 year career as an independent cotton merchant having learned the trade from past generations of colorful figures in the business including many on Cotton Row on Front Street in Memphis. Steve held leadership positions in many professional and civic organizations including the Blytheville Jaycees, Chamber of Commerce and Blytheville Rotary Club among others. He was a Paul Harris Fellow. Steve enjoyed music, particularly flat pick guitar, reading, family genealogy and the outdoors. He was a fifth generation Arkansan whose great great grandparents came to Arkansas in the 1840?s and 50?s. In addition to his parents, wife and children, Steve is also survived by his brothers, William Thomas Bryles (Anne) of Hickory Plains, Roger Kent Bryles (Mary Jane) of Fayetteville and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of loyal friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents William Thomas and Addie Elizabeth Stanley Bryles of Hickory Plains (Edwards Community) and Luther Ralph and Ruby Pearl Warren McReynolds of Dutch Mills. A celebration of Steve?s life will be held at services on Thursday, January 3, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Second Presbyterian Church in Little Rock and on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Blytheville. It is with a heavy sense of loss that I learn of Steve's death. Steve and I worked together in the cotton business many years ago. Warm, kind hearted, and with a rich sense of humor, Steve lived life the way it should be lived.

I just found out about Steve's passing after reading today's announcement about the new director of the commission. I saw with horror Steve's name listed as the former director, who had died. I quickly searched the Internet to see if it was my old friend from the Senate. How sad and sick I felt when I found out it was in fact him. I was out of town and missed the news--and the funeral and the chance to show my respect and affection.

As a lobbyist I worked with steve all those years at the Capitol. I was always glad to see him. Not only was he a warm and caring and fun person who looked on the bright side, as gloomy as things could be, but he was on the side of justice, and the powerless, the underdog. And he believed in doing the right thing.

I am very sorry for your loss, and our loss as a state, and for the loss of someone I'd like to count as a friend.

Steve helped me in the early 90s when I was a college student from Cambridge, England, working a summer job in the US. He was a tremendously generous man, a true gentleman, and a real character in the very best sense. I am deeply saddened to hear of his passing, and send my heartfelt condolences to his family.

Steve was my landlord 20 years ago when I was a simple peddling bookseller in Blytheville. I will always cherish his memory: he was a generous, funny, kind and wise man whose company I enjoyed hugely. I send my condolences from London to Pam, Emily, Caitlyn and Ben. Steve will be much missed.

I am so proud to say that we sold Steve his very first bale of cotton! And from that day forward, Caudill Gin continued to sell him every bale we ginned... He was a wonderful friend to Hershel and me and our entire family. He will truly be missrd by all. All of our prayers go to Pam, their children Mom and Dad. God Bless you all.

To Mark and the entire Bryles family. I was so saddened to learn of Steve's passing. I had the opportunity to get to know him both through his service in the legislature and in other agricultural areas. I truly consider him a friend and greatly admire and respect him for his honesty, integrity and willingness to serve and give to others. Our faith assures us that, while we mourn his loss, we really are celebrating his birthday in Heaven. The Lord called him home too soon in our view but we know he was welcomed with love and resides with the Father. All of you are in our thoughts and prayers. Milo and Ann

Steve will be missed by many in the field of education. He was a strong supporter of all U of A, Division of AG programs. The Missco Extension staff will especially miss Steve's input and support of local youth and AG programs. In the last decade, he met with some 300 high school juniors from Missco who were in the Youth Leadership Program. During their spring trip to Little Rock and the state capitol, he talked to them about government and the role of being a public servant.
