Biography: Ray Christopher Thomas was born in Fayetteville, AR on March 5, 1949 and died on the morning of December 11, 2012 in Little Rock, AR. He is predeceased by his parents, Clarence McClellan Thomas and Emma Lou Thomas. Chris is survived by his wife, Mary Burbage Thomas; his daughter, Jennifer Anne Thomas Eddy and husband, Samuel; his son, Jordan McClellan Thomas and fianc?, Katrin Gruenwald; his brother, Woodlief Atha Thomas and wife, Kathy Thomas and their sons, Christopher Thomas and Woody Thomas, Jr., and his sister, Jenny Thomas Scroggin and husband, Robby Scroggin and their sons, Sloan Scroggin and Steele Scroggin and wife, Eileen. Chris graduated from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville in 1971 with a degree in Business Administration. Afterwards he attended the UALR Bowen school of Law where he received a JD degree and served on the Law Review. As a professional, Chris served as Deputy Prosecuting Attorney for the Sixth Judicial Circuit in 1976, followed by 9 years of private practice of law. During this time he served on the Board of Directors for the Arkansas Wildlife Federation, and was elected to the Arkansas Bar House of Delegates while also participating in the work of various committees of the Bar Association. He was also a member of the Pulaski County and American Bar Associations and the Arkansas Trial Lawyers Association where he served on the Board of Governors and as Chairman of the Legislative Committee. From 1985 through July of 1988 he was the Executive Secretary of the Arkansas Judicial Department, now known as the Administrative Office of the Courts. In this position, he worked to reorganize the Judicial Department by making it a more direct agency of the Supreme Court of Arkansas to improve its efficiency. He also collaborated with many others to enact an amendment to the Arkansas Constitution which increased the jurisdiction of the Municipal Courts of the State. The adoption of this amendment made access to the judicial system easier and more affordable to the average citizen. During this time he also was a member of the Interest on Lawyers Trust Accounts Board and represented the Chief Justice on the Arkansas Crime Information Center Board. In 1988 he was appointed by the Arkansas Supreme Court to be the Director of the Office of Professional Programs. In that position he acted as the Executive Secretary for the Board of Law Examiners and Executive Secretary of the Arkansas Supreme Court. His tireless dedication to his job and the Arkansas Judges and Lawyers Advocacy Program will never be forgotten by those it affected. Chris will be dearly missed by his family and friends who loved him with all of their hearts and whom he loved unconditionally. He never forgot the importance of humor and his seemingly endless positivity kept those around him feeling better about things. As many who met him know, his dry wit and often verbose conversation was as much amusing at it was educational, and will be greatly missed. He affected many lives through his support of those in need of assistance, and we are proud of his dedication to them. A funeral service will be held at Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church, 4823 Woodlawn Ave., Little Rock on Friday, December 14, 2012 at 11 a.m. followed by a reception at the church. A private burial will follow. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to Serenity Park, 2801 W. Roosevelt Rd., Little Rock, AR 72204. Arrangements by Ruebel Funeral Home, www.ruebelfuneralhome.com.

Chris and I went to Hall together, made our senior trip to Florida together, were faternity brothers, and lived together in college.. Can't get much closer than that...

I think of all the good times hunting and fishing we had and I'll always treasure our friendship.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family during this time of shock and grief. I worked at the Court for 13 years while Chris was there and only had minor contact with him, but his calm demeanor and slow drawl made him a pleasure to be around.

Woody,
I am so saddened to hear of your brother's passing at such a young age. I have many fond memories of our Pine Manor generation, out in the front yards on summer evenings, waving hello or hanging out, having a great time. You and youro family are in my thoughts and prayers and my hope that you all can soon find peace.

You are in my thoughts and prayers. I thought so
much of Mr. Thomas ..Just think...Of stepping on
shore and finding it Heaven,Of touching a hand an finding it God's,Of breathing new air and
finding it celestial, Of waking up in glory and
finding it home.

Jordan-

I'm so very sorry for your loss. Your dad was such an institution in the legal community. If it weren't for his calming influence and dry sense of humor, I don't think I would have made it through the bar exam. He will be greatly missed.

Mary:

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to you and all of Chris? family. I had the privilege of getting to serve on the Arkansas Bar Examiners under Chris' guidance and direction. He was a dedicated lawyer to his profession and to the many positions he held. Of even more significance to me was the endearing personal friendship that I enjoyed during the six years I served with him while a member of the Arkansas Bar Examiners.

All of us, past and present, have a special respect for Chris. I feel that my life is better for having been able to know and work with Chris Thomas.

Sincerely,

As young law school grads, we were bold with energy and yearning to be a part of the honorable lure of lawyering: 'TO SERVE JUSTICE.' I am sad CHRIS's life has now ended, but joyful we started our life's profession as friends. I have a favorite memory of a shared, 1970s era special occasion. (Recalling the scene makes me smile.) I was sitting beside CHRIS at our law school graduation party. Loud, celebrating pals filled the old T.G.I.Friday location, back then, not too far from the Capitol. We picked up our drinks for a final toast to 'End The Evening.' I'm not sure if we 'gently clicked' our delicate steins or if, with random abandon, we 'crashed' the thick glass mugs, but shards and sudsy drink went fly'n. After the shock, we roared with laughter. Decades passed and we would meet, look at each other and without explaination to others nearby, we'd share a hearty laugh again. Dear Chris was always a fine fellow. I am grieved at his too, too early death. Today, I offer a final salute to the memory of a long ago young law graduate - who was heading out to try to make the world a better place for all. What a wonderful success was the life of CHRIS THOMAS.

I didn't know Chris in his professional life but became friends with him over the past 10 years. I came to know how much he loved his family by him helping me to try to be a better dad to my son and daughter. He helped me to be more understanding about life situations with my kids and I am forever grateful to him for our friendship and conversations. I am very sorry to Chris' family my thoughts and prayers are with you.

I worked for Chris at the AR Professional Programs. He hired me, then he fired me, then he hired me again--several times. You gotta love a person who does that! I also proctored for him. Chris would bring the Shipley's donuts for us proctors--we would eat just a few, and he would eat the rest! He loved sweets! He used to get after me for dropping the sugar from the donuts on the carpet. Yep, I'm going to miss Chris!

I am sorry that I did not have a chance to know Chris. If he was anything like Woody, then he was a prince of a man. I imagine that they spent their lives trying to live up to the standard of character set by the other.

I have had the pleasure and privilege of knowing Chris for the past 11 years while Proctoring the Bar Exam. He was a fine human being and a gentleman. His humor and the smell of his pipe tobacco will always have a special place in my heart and memory. I, among many others, will miss you Chris. God speed.

Chris was truly my favorite cousin. We shared many happy hours as children in Buddy's (our grandmother's)home. Our family travels to Galveston and California are some of my fondest memories. In my home are many pictures of "the 6 grandchildren". They remind me daily of the love shared by the Thomas family.
Chris will always have a special place in my memories and heart.
My love and sympathy to his family.

I am very saddened by this loss and my prayers are with Chris' family. I first worked with Chris when I served with the Arkansas Court of Appeals. We later served together for 8 years on the inaugural JLAP Copmmittee of the Arkansas Supreme Court and that program would not have the success it knows today without the guidance Chris provided in our formative years. His kindness and dry wit always made my days better when I had a chance to be with him. And I'm sure he's smiling with red pen in hand, wanting to revise and edit this post - he was an editorial master.
What a great friend and colleague.

The family has my sincere sympathy for the loss of this fine man.

I knew Chris from being a proctor for the Bar Exam for his entire tenure. Chris will be missed by the entire legal community, and anyone who knew him personally. Chris was a caring and sensitive man devoted to his work and the improvement of the system he found in place and shaped for the better.

My thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.

Chris was my favorite client. We'd been a team for more than 10 years, developing databases to track bar applicants, CLE hours, court reporters and others.

His wry sense of humor and calm demeanoer meant a lot to me. His colorful tales of college life (don't worry, Chris - my mouth is sealed!), and insightful musings on MY life kept him as a dear friend and mentor.

You were loved and will be missed, my friend!!

I am so sorry. It is hard to think of any comforting words at this time, but I do know that your father loved you dearly. He and your mother are very proud of you and the good person you have become. You have been a part of the extended Hines family for many years - please know that you will always be a welcome and loved member. My thoughts will remain with you and your family. With Love, Marsha
